Disrespect for valedictorian

The highlight of this year's university admission season is that the two top students of A00 nationwide failed their first choice to apply for admission to the computer science major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Accordingly, the standard score for admission to the computer science major (IT1) is 29.42 points (according to the high school graduation exam results) while the two top students of block A00 nationwide achieved 29.35 points.

Specifically, the national valedictorian of block A00, Nguyen Manh Thang, is a former student of Bac Giang High School for the Gifted. The male student scored 29.35 points, including 9.6 points in Math, 9.75 points in Physics and 10 points in Chemistry. Along with Thang, Nguyen Manh Hung, a former student of Trung Vuong High School (Van Lam, Hung Yen) is also one of the three national valedictorians of block A00 with a score of 29.35. Of which, Hung scored 10 points in Physics, 9.6 points in Math and 9.75 points in Chemistry. Both of them applied to study Computer Science (IT1) at Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Is it the school or the Ministry of Education and Training?

The story of the top student of block A00 failing the first choice, according to the reporter, the information is that it is due to the school because the school is autonomous in recruiting students. But there are opinions that it is due to the Ministry's scanning of fake wishes that gives such results. It is very difficult to assign responsibility now, but clearly if the regulations are correct, the regulations must be reviewed; not all of these cases have been taken into account.

After the University of Technology announced the admission scores, many people were surprised and indignant that these two candidates were rejected. Mr. Tran Trung Kien in Ha Tinh said, if the valedictorian is not recruited, who else will be recruited? To become the valedictorian, candidates must have an extremely high level of qualifications, moreover, this is a public and transparent exam so their abilities cannot be denied.

Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan in Ha Dong, Hanoi shared that he himself does not understand why people failed to select the valedictorian. The valedictorian should have been given priority. Not only is it difficult to understand, but many people feel indignant, they think that such admission is letting talented people go. " Even the valedictorians are not selected, so there is no scientific explanation for this " - Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan commented.

Contrary to the feeling of confusion and regret about the two valedictorians being rejected from their first choice, when talking to reporters of the Journalist & Public Opinion Newspaper, Mr. Ta Hai Tung - Principal of the School of Information Technology and Communication - Hanoi University of Science and Technology, appeared normal. Because he thought that these two students were only valedictorians of block A00 (Math - Physics - Chemistry). Meanwhile, block A also has A01 (Math - Physics - English).

Mr. Hung continued to explain that first of all, Hanoi University of Science and Technology recruits students according to the formula (Math x 2 + Physics + Chemistry) x ¾ and he said that it is a pity that the two top students combined are the highest, but the Math score is 9.6, so calculating according to the admission method of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (prioritizing Mathematical thinking) is a bit of a loss! "Last year, IT1 was not considered from high school scores, but mainly from the Thinking Assessment exam organized by Hanoi University of Science and Technology and talent selection (excellent students, specialized students...), this year it is reopened to encourage students, but the quota is still mainly for the two types above, not to mention block A, in addition to A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry) there is also A01 (Math, Physics, English)" - Mr. Tung shared.

Regarding the public's feeling of regret and injustice for the two valedictorians of the whole country, Mr. Tung said: The opportunity for the two candidates is still the same. Because both passed the Computer Engineering (IT2) major. After enrolling in the School of Information and Communication Technology - Hanoi University of Science and Technology, if they wish, they can participate in the entrance exam for the Bachelor of Computer Science Talent class. And if they are really good, the opportunity is still open! "The Bachelor of Computer Science Talent, each year only recruits 40 students, all "super", and only considers students who have passed the School of Information and Communication Technology - Hanoi University of Science and Technology. In addition, the IT1 and IT2 majors are not too different. These are both Bachelor's programs, the difference is only in the final year (year 4) and not much. After graduating from Bachelor's, if you want to study IT1 Engineer, IT1 Master is comfortable" - Mr. Tung shared.

Lack of both heart and vision

While the public nationwide honors the valedictorians, the studious examples with high academic achievements, the failure of these two valedictorians’ first choice is truly inappropriate. “ No matter what, they are valedictorians, now failing their favorite choice is like pouring cold water on their heads, ” said Ms. Nguyen Thu Hang in Dong Da, Hanoi.

Top students in the graduation exam to enter the University of Technology are all good students.

Mr. Ta Hai Tung - Principal of the School of Information and Communication Technology - Hanoi University of Science and Technology also admitted that after many years of training, the students who were valedictorians of the high school graduation exam when they entered the school were all good students. They were all capable of studying the majors they loved. However, due to the way the scores were calculated in the admission, they failed their first choice.

Talking to reporters of the Journalist & Public Opinion Newspaper, Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc - Chairman of the School Council - University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi felt sorry for the two valedictorians. "The University of Science and Technology has followed the regulations; however, in these cases, the admissions council can consider giving priority to direct admission to the valedictorians. This is due to the heart and vision of the school" - emphasized Mr. Nguyen Dinh Duc.

Meanwhile, Mr. Le Truong Tung - Chairman of the Board of FPT University said that currently, schools have many admission methods, not just based on graduation exam scores, which is why the top student in the graduation exam fails the university entrance exam. He also said that in principle, the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training are not rigidly imposed on schools. In university admissions, schools are autonomous in admissions and schools must be transparent in admissions. But no matter how autonomous, there must not be a situation where the top student fails and another student passes.

“Schools can recruit students in any way, but they must ensure fairness. For my school, the school has criteria for students who meet the requirements to be admitted. Students who meet the standards to study their favorite major are accepted. Many schools are currently chasing quantity but forgetting quality. Taking from top to bottom and then rejecting the best students is not up to standard. No matter what method of recruitment, it is impossible for the valedictorian to fail. That is not okay,” commented Mr. Le Truong Tung.

Through discussions with experts and other parties, it can be seen that the admission process has many criteria, methods of admission, and many exams, but in the end, the top students still fail. This shows that the admission and examination matrix is too complicated, while the admission results are not convincing. An admission process in which the best out of 1 million participants still fail to get into their favorite major is definitely problematic.
