How have the rankings of high schools in Hanoi changed after the 10th grade exam?

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí16/07/2024

In 2024, the rankings of top high schools in Hanoi will be shaken up. For the first time, Chu Van An High School will lose its unique position.

In the first round of standard score announcement, Chu Van An school got 42.5 points, tied for first place with Le Quy Don school (Ha Dong) and Yen Hoa.

However, after the Hanoi Departmentof Education and Training announced additional benchmark scores, Chu Van An dropped to 4th place in benchmark scores, behind 3 schools: Le Quy Don, Yen Hoa, and Thang Long.

The No. 1 position this year belongs to Le Quy Don High School, Ha Dong District. Last year, this school ranked 5th. The school has never been in the top 3 schools with the highest standard scores in Hanoi since 2023.

Also "dropping in rank" with Chu Van An is Kim Lien. The school that always has a competitive benchmark score for 2nd and 3rd place this year took 41.75 entrance points, ranking 5th with two other schools, Phan Dinh Phung and Nguyen Gia Thieu.

Similarly, last year Viet Duc School ranked 3rd with 43 entrance points, but this year it fell to 8th place, near the bottom of the table with Nguyen Thi Minh Khai School and only 0.25 points higher than Nhan Chinh School.

On the other hand, Thang Long High School, from the group of 3 schools with the lowest standard scores in the leading group, has risen to the top 3 schools. Thang Long School ranked 2nd, equal to Yen Hoa and only 0.25 points behind Le Quy Don.

For the past 10 years, the group of high schools with the highest admission scores in Hanoi have been "familiar faces".

Accordingly, enrollment area number 1 has two schools: Chu Van An (Tay Ho district) and Phan Dinh Phung (Ba Dinh district).

Enrollment area number 2 has two schools: Viet Duc (Hoan Kiem district) and Thang Long (Hai Ba Trung district).

Enrollment area number 3 has three schools: Kim Lien (Dong Da district), Yen Hoa (Cau Giay district) and Nhan Chinh (Thanh Xuan district).

Admission area number 5 has one school, Nguyen Gia Thieu (Long Bien district).

Admission area number 7 has one school, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai (Bac Tu Liem district).

Admission area number 10 has one school, Le Quy Don (Ha Dong district).

Some years, the leading group may have new names such as Tran Phu, Cau Giay, Le Quy Don - Dong Da. However, these schools do not maintain stable rankings.

For example, last year, these schools ranked 6th, 9th, and 10th respectively, but this year they are absent from the top 10.

A high school teacher who asked to remain anonymous commented: "There is a big difference in the scores of the public 10th grade exam. The top, middle, and bottom schools have very large differences in standard scores, from 5-10 points.

If you compare the top and bottom groups, the gap is up to 25 points.

When candidates with high to very high scores change their preferences at specialized schools, the "top of the top" group of schools, there is an immediate change in the admission scores. Top schools must have their admission scores reduced significantly compared to last year."

The teacher also added that the differentiation in exam scores and benchmark scores partly shows that the quality of education is not uniform throughout the city.

At the same time, the race for extra classes among students in inner-city areas is also one of the reasons for the large difference in test scores between groups, leading to strong differentiation in benchmark scores.

In 2025, the 2010 class will take the 10th grade entrance exam according to the 2018 general education program. The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has not yet announced the 10th grade exam plan in 2025, the number of subjects, and the exam format.
