On the afternoon of October 18, the Ministry of Education and Training officially announced the reference questions for the 2025 high school graduation exam for 17 subjects with answers. In particular, the literature exam attracted public attention when it did not include any works in the current textbooks, and had a new way of setting questions compared to the old program's exam with many new commands, such as requiring a 600-word essay on the question with the highest score instead of allowing freedom to "dance with the pen".
Literature questions for high school graduation exam 2025 "completely transformed"
Nguyen Van Thu, a 12th grade student at Tam Vu High School (Hau Giang), commented that the reference exam for literature was "quite difficult and highly differentiated". That's because right from question 3, students had to point out the effectiveness of an artistic device, instead of "opening" with questions about rhetorical devices, genres, and effects of artistic devices in a specific sentence like before. "This makes it easy for students to get confused when reading the questions", the male student said.
Meanwhile, in the writing section, Thu said that although the topic requires you to stick to the excerpt, the question asking you to analyze the image of Hanoi is still not easy for those who have never been to the capital to feel the atmosphere and streets. This makes it difficult for you to write good, emotional lines. "With question 2, although artificial intelligence is close to reality, it will be easier for you to share your views if the question mentions the issue of young people," Thu said.
Thu also added that this was the first time he had seen a requirement to write a 200-word paragraph, while the requirement to write 600 words had been announced by teachers a long time ago. Thu also supported the requirement to write a social argumentative essay in 600 words, because it was difficult to include many ideas in a literary argumentative essay of only 600 words. "I found the question much easier," the male student shared, adding that making an outline before doing the test seemed to be mandatory for this question.
"Overall, I think the test is quite differentiated and practical, but it does not follow the textbook curriculum when the writing section does not include a comparison of two works," Thu said. According to the male student, the 600-word test will not be able to fill 3 pages of paper, so from 2025 onwards, there will no longer be cases of a candidate writing up to 12 pages like before.
Candidates in Ho Chi Minh City before the 2024 high school graduation exam in literature
A 12th grade student at Bach Dang High School (Hai Phong) assessed that the literature exam from 2025 is a "complete change". In the reading comprehension section, instead of asking about the poetic form as usual, the exam requires candidates to identify the signs of the poetic form. This is a very new command and requires students to have a new way of answering, this male student acknowledged. "However, I am not too worried because the teachers will teach me," the male student said.
Fear of losing points in writing
This male student added that question 1 in the writing section will be difficult for those who cannot determine the requirements of the question. However, those who listen carefully to the lecture and form a natural reflex will not be discouraged. As for question 2, social argumentation, it can help students freely express their own opinions, exploiting many aspects, not just being limited to a certain work. "I can get over 8 points with this question," the male student said.
"I personally hate having to memorize the outline every day and I never support this issue. I quite like the current open-ended questions, although it is quite difficult at first because there will be many new types of questions, requiring students to brainstorm, research, and update current events to be able to do them. But every exam requires learning skills to do well, so I don't feel pressured," the male student added.
However, this male student also pointed out a difficulty in writing the exact number of words required by the exam because he and his schoolmates often "overwrite" in tests due to having too many parts to cover. "So I'm also worried about whether doing so will cause problems when taking the exam or if the teachers will be flexible in this matter," the male student wondered.

Sharing the same concern, Nguyen Thi Thanh My, a 12th grader at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (HCMC), is also afraid that the examiner will deduct points if she writes less or more than the required amount of words. Setting a pre-set amount of words in the direction of 200 or 600 words also requires students to practice writing "a lot" to be able to develop ideas and flow the text as required, My added.
Another difficulty in the literature reference test, according to My, is that it is not clear whether the content of the writing section will follow the order of a 200-word literary essay and a 600-word social essay, or whether the official test will have changes. Because, up to now, social essays have always been shorter than literary essays instead of the other way around like the current reference test, and this has a significant impact on the way candidates study.
"In the past, we were always used to writing longer literary essays and it became a habit when doing the test, so if we didn't separate them clearly, it would be very difficult for us to review," My said, adding that because the test questions were about works outside of the textbook, students had to learn how to write the correct type of essay: comparing or evaluating two different works or comparing and evaluating at the same time.
