Candidates after the Ministry of Public Security's competency assessment test
This afternoon, July 7, about 18,000 candidates nationwide officially completed the Ministry of Public Security's competency assessment test, which is also the final test candidates need to pass to be admitted to 8 police schools. At the test site of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City), Quoc Khang (from An Giang), a student at the School of Culture, Department of Training - Ministry of Public Security, confessed that he was completely shocked when he read the literature essay question.
“At first, when I saw the poem Tay Tien (Quang Dung), I was very happy, but when I saw the next page with Viet Bac (To Huu), my smile gradually faded. I had absolutely no idea that the question would require us to compare two works because we had never studied this part before. The seniors who had taken the exam also said that we just need to review and analyze individual texts. The words just flowed and my hand just wrote, but I wasn’t sure if I could express my ideas correctly,” Khang confided.
According to regulations, candidates taking the Ministry of Public Security’s competency assessment test are not allowed to take the test out. However, according to memory, many candidates believe that the literature essay section of the CA2 test requires candidates to compare two poems, one from Viet Bac and one from Tay Tien , to clarify the difference between the image of “humans” and “the marching path”. Meanwhile, the reading comprehension uses the image of bamboo to depict the qualities of Vietnamese people.
Parents wait for their children to finish the exam on both sides of the road. Many of them are families from the provinces of the West and South Central regions.
Regarding this year's literature essay, a candidate in Quy Nhon City (Binh Dinh) said the difficulty level was similar to the literature exam of the 2018 National High School Exam, when it also required candidates to compare the contrasts in the works Chiec thuyen ngoai xa (Nguyen Minh Chau) and Hai dua tre (Thach Lam). "The essay topic is really strange," shared the female student who was admitted early to Ho Chi Minh City University of Law and University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University).
Agreeing, Thuy Vy, a student at the School of Culture, Department of Training - Ministry of Public Security, said she also had difficulty in comparing two poems because "she was not sure if she could present the correct structure of the essay or not". Thuy Linh, from Tien Giang, highly appreciated the literature essay proposal and added that the reason she chose to take the literature exam despite being good at natural sciences was to avoid doing a math essay, "because it is easy to lose points for presentation".
Contestant Minh Thu is confident that she has done about 70% in this year's competency assessment test. "I did not study the section on comparing works, however, Tay Tien and Viet Bac were both the focus of my review for the high school graduation exam, so I can say that I 'hit the jackpot'. Maybe many other friends are in the same situation because my friends also studied this work a lot. Now that the exam is over, I am extremely happy and feel refreshed," Thu said.
The exam scores of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education gather candidates who want to apply to the People's Police University.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, this is the third year the competency assessment exam has been held, attracting nearly 18,000 candidates, an increase of 20% compared to 2023. The exam results will be used to consider admission to 8 police schools according to method 3, which is combined with high school graduation exam scores, in which the competency assessment exam results account for 60%. About 80% of the more than 2,100 quotas for police schools in 2024 will be considered for admission in this way.
Notably, all universities and academies this year did not meet their direct admission quotas as planned. Most of the units announced that they would transfer the remaining quotas from methods 1 and 2 to method 3. Previously, there were 11 candidates admitted under method 1 (winning national and international prizes) and 116 candidates admitted under method 2 (having foreign language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 7.5 or higher).
The structure of the Ministry of Public Security's competency assessment test consists of two parts: multiple choice and essay. The multiple choice part focuses on testing knowledge in the current high school program, including knowledge of natural sciences, social sciences, and foreign languages; in the essay part, candidates can choose one of two contents: math (code CA1) or literature (code CA2).
