The new Road Traffic Safety Law clearly stipulates that when participating in traffic, drivers must carry a certificate of compulsory civil liability insurance for motor vehicle owners. This includes motorbikes, the most popular means of transport in Vietnam.
The insurance period is stipulated in Article 9 of Decree No. 67/2023/ND-CP of the Government. Accordingly, compulsory civil liability insurance of motor vehicle owners has a minimum effective period of 1 year and a maximum of 3 years. However, in some special cases, the insurance period may be less than 1 year.
People need to pay attention to the deadline for purchasing motorbike insurance.
The following cases can purchase insurance for less than 1 year:
Temporary import and re-export of foreign motor vehicles: When a foreign motor vehicle participates in traffic in Vietnam for less than 1 year, the vehicle owner can purchase short-term insurance suitable for the vehicle's circulation time.
Motor vehicles with an age of less than 1 year: According to the law, these vehicles are allowed to purchase insurance for a shorter period.
Motor vehicles subject to temporary registration: Vehicles temporarily registered under the regulations of the Ministry of Public Security are also allowed to purchase insurance for less than 1 year.
In addition, in case the car owner owns multiple vehicles and wants to synchronize the insurance period of the vehicles, the insurance period can be adjusted to less than 1 year, corresponding to the remaining time of the first insurance contract of the year.
The law also clearly stipulates that during the effective period of the insurance, if there is a transfer of ownership of the motor vehicle, the old vehicle owner has the right to request termination of the insurance contract. In this case, the insurance company must refund the insurance premium corresponding to the remaining period of the contract from the time of termination.
Motorcycle insurance is not only a legal obligation but also an important financial protection measure for traffic participants. Compliance with regulations on insurance terms will help people avoid unnecessary risks, while ensuring safety when traveling on the road.
