New Year 2025 is about to begin. In countries around the world, people are eagerly preparing for the moment of transition between heaven and earth. From splendid fireworks displays at famous symbols, to traditional rituals that symbolize new beginnings and luck, each country has its own way to welcome the new year and close the old year.
Countries in the South Pacific will be the first to ring in 2025, led by New Zealand. In Auckland, thousands are expected to gather in the city centre or climb ancient volcanoes to enjoy the fireworks.
Two hours later, the Australian city of Sydney will follow suit, with more than 1 million people pouring into Sydney Harbour. The event will include a performance by pop star Robbie Williams and traditional ceremonies honouring Aboriginal people.
In South America, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, continues to claim the title of “the heart of South America” with the region’s biggest countdown party. More than 2 million people are expected to gather at Copacabana Beach to watch a 12-minute fireworks display launched from 10 ships offshore, along with live concerts by top stars such as Anitta and Caetano Veloso.
Meanwhile, in the US, New York eagerly welcomes the new year with the traditional "crystal ball drop" ceremony in Times Square, combined with explosive performances by the Jonas Brothers and TLC, promising to bring a bustling atmosphere to millions of viewers.
In Asia, people are equally excited to prepare for the most important holiday of the year. In Japan, temples and homes are meticulously cleaned, even the tatami mats are "shaken clean" with large sticks.
The Year of the Snake, symbolizing renewal and rebirth, brings with it the hope of new beginnings. Small, smiling snake statues have appeared in stores, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Jakarta (Indonesia) promises to bring a vibrant and eye-catching atmosphere with an impressive performance from 800 drones and brilliant fireworks at the Indonesia Hotel roundabout.
In Vietnam, although it is not yet the traditional New Year according to custom, localities across the country organize many cultural and artistic activities to welcome the new year 2025.
