Speaking at Tsinghua University in the Chinese capital Beijing, Valdis Dombrovskis stressed that Europe's economic ties with China were deep, but Beijing "could do a lot to help reduce the perception of risk".
Mr Dombrovskis warned that Europe would be more determined to address “injustices” in economic relations with China.
“We acknowledge that the world needs China,” said the EU Trade Commissioner. “However, the world’s second-largest economy needs to see that the lack of reciprocity and a level playing field from China, coupled with broader geopolitical changes, has forced Europe to become more assertive.
The EU welcomes competition, but it must be fair and we will be more determined to tackle injustices."
Those were the main messages from Mr. Dombrovskis since he began his China tour on September 23 and began four-day visits to Shanghai, Suzhou and Beijing.
The EU Trade Commissioner is scheduled to attend the 10th China-EU High-Level Economic and Trade Dialogue with Chinese officials on September 25.
