The joy of filmmakers after Cannes Film Festival 2023
The 2023 Cannes International Film Festival is a festival that brings many emotions to film enthusiasts in Vietnam with the victory of directors Tran Anh Hung and Pham Thien An.
Director Tran Anh Hung was honored as Best Director at Cannes 2023
30 years after the film "The Scent of Green Papaya", director Tran Anh Hung (French, Vietnamese origin) was once again honored at Cannes in the category of Best Director, with the work "La passion de dodin bouffant".
This time, his victory is even more valuable because he surpassed many great directors in the world such as: Ken Loach, Wes Anderson, Todd Haynes...
Along with him, director Pham Thien An (Vietnam) received the Camera d'Or award for the film "Inside the yellow cocoon shell".
Before the success of the two directors, screenwriter Trinh Thanh Nha called it a "shock" for Vietnamese cinema, director Vo Thanh Hoa considered "this will be a great driving force for the Vietnamese film industry".
Director Luong Dinh Dung expressed: "For the first time, a Vietnamese director has officially won an award at Cannes in a proper manner, a truly Vietnamese film and the "Cannes playground" - one of the major film festivals ranked in the world can be compared to the world-class "World Cup playgrounds".
We should also be happy and welcome director Thien An as someone who brings the honor of Vietnamese cinema to the world. Not only for Thien An but also for a future generation of young filmmakers to look at, cinema is respected as it is and its power affects the human world to create endless inspiration for them to contribute to the country's cinema."
Sharing the joy, screenwriter and film communications expert Chau Quang Phuoc said that this event has a great inspirational effect on domestic filmmakers.
"However, the new success of Tran Anh Hung or the initial success of Pham Thien An, in the end, is still only the individual success of each filmmaker.
Both works are the result of most or all foreign producers and investment funds. Therefore, this has little to do with the so-called progress of Vietnamese cinema," said Mr. Phuoc.
What is the way for "Inside the Golden Cocoon" in Vietnam?
In front of thousands of spectators at the Cannes Film Festival, including many famous filmmakers and actors, Pham Thien An thanked his collaborators who helped him complete the project.
There was a lot of sincerity and emotion in the young director's speech: "We have traveled a very long journey to get here and cinema is the faith that binds us together."

Before the closing ceremony, An also confided: "I hope the film will travel far in the world and return to Vietnam with us." That is the young director's dream of "going to return". Perhaps, film fans at home are also looking forward to a Cannes-winning film being released in theaters.
However, with art films like "Inside the Golden Cocoon", experts cannot hide their concerns about this journey.
In fact, over the past years, even famous Vietnamese films by famous directors, which have won many prestigious awards in the international market such as: "Choi Voi" (Bui Thac Chuyen), "Bi, Dung So" (Phan Dang Di), "Dap Canh Giua Khong Trung" (Nguyen Hoang Diep), "Dao Cu Dan Ngu Cu" (Hong Anh)... have had difficulty being popular with the general audience.
Most recently, the documentary "The Children in the Mist" by Ha Le Diem was shortlisted for the Oscar nominations. After traveling around the world and winning more than 34 awards at international film festivals, when it was brought back to Vietnam, it still had to "look with red eyes" for a distributor.

"At this point, it's hard to say what the future release story for "Inside the Golden Cocoon" will be (if any).
With a duration of 182 minutes - equal to many Hollywood blockbusters released in Vietnam - as described by international press, but with a slow pace, I think it will be the first obstacle in the distribution process.
Meanwhile, the domestic market favors Vietnamese films of moderate length, not to mention the distribution criteria and number of screenings of the distributor.
Besides, with art films - which are not easy to watch like many Vietnamese films shown in theaters recently, the risk of the film encountering difficulties in distribution is inevitable, regardless of the international reputation of the film. In fact, many Oscar-winning films have also struggled when entering the Vietnamese market," the expert commented.
