These days, when coming to Thanh Oai, many people feel like they are "lost" in a new urban area with asphalt and concrete roads leading to every alley and house. In the middle of the straight, vast fields are ecological production models and industrial clusters under construction day and night. This change is thanks to the breakthrough efforts and daring to think and act of the collective leadership of the People's Committee of Thanh Oai District (Hanoi) in building Thanh Oai towards the goal of a modern, green, ecological district but still carrying within it the core values of the cultural traditions here.
Developing high value agricultural product chains
Looking at the orchid garden in full development, signaling a bumper year, Mr. Ngo Minh Truong, owner of Tien Lu orchid garden, Dan Hoa commune, could not hide his emotion as he shared: Although I am in my third year of growing and trading orchids, I still think this is just a dream. Without the support and backing from the leaders of Thanh Oai district, I certainly could not have had the large-scale orchid growing model as it is today.
Mr. Truong said that he realized that the demand for orchids in the domestic market was very large, while most of the seedlings and flowers had to be imported from Taiwan. Meanwhile, the climate and soil conditions in his hometown were quite suitable, so he decided to invest all his capital in growing orchids. His idea was quickly realized when the District People's Committee supported him with science and technology.
“With a capital of more than 6 billion VND, I have invested in renovating, leveling and building a system of net houses and greenhouses for growing orchids. The model has a scale of 3,600m2, growing Phalaenopsis orchids imported from Taiwan (China). In particular, with a system of modern equipment, automatic control of temperature, light... helps the orchid garden avoid pests and diseases, develop as desired, creating high efficiency. It is expected that this year's Tet harvest season, the orchid garden will harvest more than 400,000 orchids. With the same price as last year, it is expected that the orchid garden will generate 10 billion VND in revenue per year.”
Mr. Ngo Minh Truong's orchid growing model not only brings economic value but also creates a green, clean and beautiful environment. In particular, his orchid garden has created regular jobs for 5 workers with an income of 5 to 7 million VND. In addition, during the peak harvest season, his orchid garden attracts 30 to 40 workers.
Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Thanh Oai District Nguyen Doan Thang said that the orchid growing model using high technology of Mr. Ngo Minh Truong is one of the effective models, which has proven its success in increasing the value of cultivation thanks to investment in science and technology. The model is very suitable for suburban agricultural production such as Thanh Oai District where the production land is increasingly narrowing. Here, with only 10 Northern Sao, but thanks to the application of high technology, it has brought in profits of billions of VND/year for each household.
According to Mr. Nguyen Doan Thang, models like Tien Lu orchid garden are not rare in Thanh Oai today. Thanh Oai currently has 12 high-tech agricultural models, such as: Growing hydroponic vegetables in Kim Bai town with an area of 225m2; Growing vegetables using high technology in Dan Hoa commune with an area of 3.4ha; Raising egg-laying chickens according to VietGAP process in Lien Chau commune with a scale of 30,000 egg-laying chickens, 10,000 meat chickens... In addition, the district maintains and develops 3 linked chains: AZ safe food chain of Hoang Long Cooperative (Tan Uoc commune); Boi Khe fragrant rice chain (Tam Hung commune); Lien Chau duck egg chain (Lien Chau commune). Notably, from the above shift, up to now, Thanh Oai has formed concentrated production areas developing in the direction of VietGAP and organic such as: Rice production area with an area of 6,453ha; fruit tree growing area of 300ha; Safe vegetable growing area of more than 100 hectares; aquaculture area of 300 hectares...
Sharing about the results Thanh Oai has achieved, Chairman of Thanh Oai District People's Committee Bui Van Sang said that since the Prime Minister recognized the district as meeting the new rural standards in 2020, the entire Thanh Oai district has made constant efforts to promote socio-economic development, and the people's lives have become increasingly prosperous. The "sweet fruit" received is that 9/9 criteria for advanced new rural districts have been completed.
Recently, the Hanoi People's Committee held a conference on "Voting to propose and recognize Thanh Oai district as meeting advanced new rural standards in 2024". The Steering Committee for National Target Programs on New Rural Construction in Hanoi unanimously voted to propose recognizing Thanh Oai district as meeting advanced new rural standards in 2024.
Despite the above results, according to Chairman Bui Van Sang, Thanh Oai district is known as a land with many strengths for economic development. However, the development of Thanh Oai district is not commensurate with its potential and advantages. Therefore, with the orientation of becoming a district in the period of 2026-2030, Thanh Oai has adjusted a number of plans to suit the general planning of the city and the development conditions of the district. For agriculture, the district focuses on successfully building models of rural tourism, experiential agriculture, and chain resorts. The target of the models is riverside fields organized into ecological villages, resort parks combined with urban agricultural cultivation. The production models must also be green, high-tech, closed, valuable agricultural models... The district will invest in traffic infrastructure, production infrastructure, have policies to support and attract businesses to invest in production...
Sharing about the orientation in implementing the goal of building Thanh Oai into an ecological district, Chairman Bui Van Sang emphasized that Thanh Oai district is located in the green corridor of Hanoi city, basically ecological agriculture combined with craft villages and innovation clusters associated with industrial and service development, tourism, protection of landscape values, high-quality ecological environment, comprehensive economic development. Therefore, the district will synchronously implement solutions to create a green - clean - beautiful village landscape space, preserve and promote traditional village values. For suburban communes, focus on improving the quality of life of people; at the same time, create a space to connect socio-economic fields, preserve cultural identity, build a diverse and unique rural image. Doing these things will meet the requirements of urban development in the future while still maintaining the traditional rural image rich in identity. However, to do this, in addition to the determination of the grassroots, we need a lot of resources and in terms of policies, we need support from the City as well as the Central Government. Only then can we realize the aspiration of building Thanh Oai into an ecological, green, beautiful district where people's lives are prosperous, wealthy and sustainable.
