Due to climate change and the El Nino phenomenon, in May 2023, the temperature in the North was much higher than in previous years, the number of hot days also increased, followed by severe heat waves in the Northern and North Central regions. Along with that, the drought and water shortage caused the hydropower reservoirs in the North to be close to the dead water level. Vietnam Electricity Group in general and the Northern Power Corporation in particular faced many difficulties in performing the task of supplying electricity.

In mid-May, heat waves appeared widely in the northern provinces, the power load capacity in the North increased sharply with an output increase of 13.59%, the highest capacity increased by 17.42% compared to the same period in 2022.

Identifying the difficulties caused by natural disasters and weather, with the spirit of solidarity and the highest effort to provide electricity to customers during the peak of the hot season, the Northern Power Corporation increased 100% of human resources, equipment and was on duty 24/24h, quickly organizing to fix the grid overload problem to restore electricity to customers.

At the same time, to cope with the prolonged heat and the shortage of available power sources as well as to ensure the safety of the national power system, EVNNPC, under the direction of the Power System Dispatch Center, reduced output by mobilizing customers to adjust their loads and save electricity to ensure operational management in an extremely difficult situation regarding power sources.

In May 2023, the total commercial electricity output of the Corporation reached 7,294 billion kWh, an increase of 5.72% over the same period in 2022. Of which, the electricity supply for industrial and construction loads accounted for 63.31% and increased by 0.54%; the consumer management component accounted for 28.89% and increased by 15.05%; the commercial and service component accounted for 3.24% and increased by 23.9%; the agricultural, forestry and fishery component accounted for 1.66% and increased by 9.76%; other activities accounted for 2.89% and increased by 21.84%.

Regarding business and customer service, the Corporation focuses human and material resources on ensuring electricity operation management during the hot season, strictly controlling meter readings and issuing invoices during the hot season, avoiding errors for customers.

The Corporation strengthens the implementation of the Prime Minister's Directive No. 20/CT-TTg dated June 8, 2023 on enhancing electricity saving in the period of 2023 - 2025 and the following years and the instructions of Vietnam Electricity Group on the situation of electricity supply and efficient use of electricity in the dry season of 2023.

In May 2023, the Corporation received and resolved power supply for 235 medium-voltage customers, the average time to resolve procedures of the electricity industry was 3.48 days. In the first 5 months of 2023, the unit received and resolved power supply for 881 medium-voltage customers, the average time to resolve procedures of the electricity industry was 3.51 days, a decrease of 0.35 days compared to the same period in 2022.

In May 2023, the Corporation's Customer Care Center received 936,919 customer requests through all channels. Of which: received through channels including chatbot, DVCQG portal, app, automatic response with 557,812 requests, accounting for 59.54%; received through the 19006769 hotline accounting for 16.59% (with a total of 149,297 incoming calls, an increase of 33,198 calls compared to the same period in 2022 and an increase of 33,517 calls compared to April 2023).

The number of customer complaints and recommendations regarding electricity prices and load shedding during hot weather are thoroughly resolved by the units, without backlog or over-leveling.

Regarding investment in construction of 110kV projects, in May 2023, the Corporation started 3 projects, the total number of projects started by the end of May was 12/69 projects; 3 projects were energized. The Corporation also energized the 110kV line from Nong Cong 220kV substation - Nghi Son 220kV substation and branch, Thanh Hoa province (phase 1).

In early June, units within the Corporation ensured safe and stable power supply for high school exams in 27 northern provinces.

It is forecasted that in June and the following months of 2023, the weather will still have hot spells. The Northern Power Corporation will continue to closely coordinate with the National Power System Dispatch Center (A0) and the Northern Power System Dispatch Center (A1) to ensure stable and safe operation of the system, reducing power according to the dispatcher's orders in accordance with current regulations.

Units in the entire Corporation will strengthen the inspection and control of labor safety for all work on the power grid, from the beginning of the work until the end of the work; ensure that they are fully equipped with labor insurance, safety equipment, working tools, and fully implement safety measures according to regulations. Workers must ensure good health during the process of handling incidents under the hot sun.

The Corporation continues to promote communication about the electricity supply situation and the efficient use of electricity. At the Corporation and its units, electricity staff need to be exemplary in implementing electricity saving, actively mobilizing relatives and friends to support and participate in electricity saving programs under the direction of EVN and the Northern Power Corporation.
