Lam Gia Van (born in 1998) grew up in a well-educated family in Xi'an (Shaanxi, China), with both grandparents and parents being teachers. Inheriting the best from the previous generation, Lam Gia Van soon stood out from her peers.
The prodigy that the whole country expects
When he was in primary school, Lam Gia Van showed a special interest in history. He read many books and constantly asked questions to improve his knowledge. Gia Van's talent was discovered and nurtured by his family early on.
In high school, Lam Gia Van's level of historical knowledge far surpassed other students, becoming a famous figure in school.
At the age of 16, he became the author of the history book "When Taoism Ruled China" . The work quickly created a buzz in the field of history after being published. The author of the book received many compliments for his profound and skillful writing. Some people even said that this work must have been written by a doctor, no one thought that a high school student could write a book with such a huge amount of knowledge.
At the time of the book's release, Lam Gia Van hid his identity because he did not want to become the center of media attention. His wish was to be a normal person, to study, research and freely write books.
A famous history teacher once exclaimed: "Lam Gia Van is the most talented historical researcher I have ever met."
Not long after, he continued to publish his second book, "Sadness and Joy for the World" . Once again, Lam Gia Van created a stir in the Chinese literary world.
However, unlike last time, for the benefit of the school and family, Lam Gia Van announced his identity to the public.
Choosing to leave forever at the age of 18
It was thought that revealing his identity would bring glory and success to the young man, but no, it was the beginning of tragedy.
Lam Gia Van received suspicious looks from those around him. Few people believed that at such a young age, he could write such profound things, his knowledge was on par with that of many professors.
He became a victim of cyberbullying. From then on, he began to doubt himself. Public pressure pushed Lam Gia Van into depression. The young author's illness became more and more serious.
During this period, Lam Gia Van fell into a state of loneliness, always feeling tired when trying to socialize with his peers. In his free time, he preferred to focus on studying history and reading books instead of communicating with people.
On the evening of December 24, 2016, Lam Gia Van decided to jump off a building and die forever at the age of 18. Before his death, he showed many signs of mental illness, the most obvious of which was that he often took off his glasses and went into his bedroom, looking around at his certificates of merit but not feeling as happy as before.
After Lam Gia Van rested, his family found a suicide note: "I hope these two books will not be reprinted. As for the remaining books, I want my parents to destroy them all."
The news of the "Chinese History Prodigy" committing suicide shocked and saddened the public. The last letter he wrote showed his extreme pain and indignation.
Reading the letter, Lam Gia Van's parents cried their eyes out when they learned that in his final moments, the young man still hoped that his parents would live happily for the rest of their lives.
In the letter, Lam Gia Van did not forget to send his regards to the doctor who treated him for his mental illness. He was grateful that during the most difficult period, the doctor had made efforts to care for and accompany him. Although the treatment process did not achieve good results, he hoped that the doctor would not think about his passing.
Besides, Lam Gia Van also sent his thanks to teachers, friends, and those who believed in him. What made everyone heartbroken was that at the end of the letter, the "child prodigy" said he still loved history.
"This life has too much pressure, even though I tried, I couldn't overcome it. I want to free myself to another world," Lam Gia Van said.
The passing of Lam Gia Van is considered a great loss to the Chinese historical industry. Many people believe that if he had lived and continued to contribute, he would have certainly done greater things and become the pride of the country of a billion people.
