A US federal judge on February 27 ordered the US government to reverse mass layoffs of federal employees, which are part of a plan by President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk to cut the size of the government workforce.
Under the ruling, the Office of Personnel Management must withdraw directives that were sent to multiple federal agencies, resulting in thousands of layoffs.
The Washington Post quoted Judge William Alsup of the federal district court in San Francisco emphasizing: "The Office of Personnel Management does not have any authority, under any historical statute, to hire or fire employees at other agencies."
He also explained that the US Congress has given hiring and firing powers to specific agencies. For example, the Department of Defense has clear legal authority to hire and fire its own personnel.
The ruling marks a new legal setback in Mr Trump’s efforts to restructure the US government. Just days earlier, another judge on the West Coast blocked Mr Trump’s refugee ban.
Additionally, a few weeks ago, a court also suspended Mr. Trump's executive order to abolish birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed by the US Constitution./.
