People have difficulty in expanding the area.
According to data from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thai Nguyen, this locality currently has over 22,200 hectares of tea, fresh bud output reaching 273,000 tons, 193 tea products certified with OCOP standards from 3 to 5 stars (including 2 OCOP products reaching 5 stars); tea product value reaching 13,800 billion VND. Thai Nguyen has risen to the top of the country in terms of area, productivity, output, income value from tea trees, as well as product value obtained per hectare of tea land.
However, the demand for expanding tea growing areas of farmers in the "first tea land" is still very large, especially in the Tan Cuong tea area (Thai Nguyen City). In particular, the conversion of ineffective intercropped rice fields into tea growing areas cannot be implemented because the proposed conversion locations are mainly located in the urban planning area in the West of Thai Nguyen City.
According to Mr. Duong Son Ha - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thai Nguyen, the expansion of tea growing area still faces many difficulties because some localities have to prioritize the implementation of investment projects to develop infrastructure, urban areas, industrial parks and clusters according to the planning of Thai Nguyen province for the period 2021-2030; the process of converting ineffective rice land to tea growing is still stuck.
“The locality is reviewing and completing the planning of production areas, assessing the current land status and tea development advantages to establish and plan tea production areas according to GAP and organic standards to create quality raw material areas for processing. In particular, planning tea production sites associated with experiential tourism and eco-tourism is being implemented.
“Digitalize tea production areas according to planning for management and synchronous application of standard production processes. At the same time, protect existing tea growing areas and promote expansion and sustainable development of tea growing areas. On that basis, localities proactively develop targets for expanding production scale and tea variety structure to meet market demand to ensure that by 2030, the tea growing area in the province will reach 24,500 hectares,” said Mr. Duong Son Ha.

To concretize this policy, Resolution No. 11/NQ-TU on developing Thai Nguyen tea industry in the period of 2025-2030 has affirmed the great determination of the province, the goal is to increase revenue from tea to 1 billion USD".
Early planning of Tan Cuong tea area associated with tourism and service development
The Secretary of the Thai Nguyen Provincial Party Committee requested the Provincial People's Committee to review the planning and propose a plan to expand the Tan Cuong tea area to a scale of 20 hectares or more, combining urban planning, concentrated community tea cultural space associated with tourism and service development, taking tea as the center and driving force for development.
The area of tea applying safe production processes has increased rapidly, many scientific and technological advances have been applied such as: Using organic fertilizers, biological products, water-saving irrigation technology in intensive tea cultivation.
The land of the first tea has over 7,000 hectares applying technology (installing automatic and semi-automatic irrigation systems), accounting for 31.5% of the province's tea area; 5,920 hectares are certified to meet VietGAP and organic standards (of which: VietGAP certification for 5,788 hectares, organic and other GAP certification for 132 hectares), accounting for 26.6% of the province's tea area. 62 growing area codes are located on the global GPS system to track product origin.

Thai Nguyen province is researching, building and registering for protection of the geographical indication “Thai Nguyen” for tea products based on the collective trademark “Thai Nguyen Tea”. Applying digital technology and e-commerce in business; effectively building and deploying e-commerce websites to promote, expand, search for markets, and consume tea products and products from Thai Nguyen tea.
Thai Nguyen will diversify tea products to ensure that the structure of high-yield, high-quality tea varieties in the whole province by 2030 will reach 85-90% of the total area, and midland tea varieties will reach 10-15%.
