Tet for commercial counselors away from home

Báo Công thươngBáo Công thương29/01/2025

For commercial counselors, Tet is not only an occasion for reunion but also an opportunity to promote and boost trade promotion activities of Vietnamese culture and goods to partners.

For those working in market development, whose task is to "contribute to increasing the presence of Vietnamese goods in the local area", Tet is an opportunity to promote and boost cultural and trade promotion activities of Vietnamese goods to partners.

Just enough Tet for the "ambassadors"...

In the “land of maple leaves”, since the beginning of January, the atmosphere of welcoming the traditional Vietnamese Lunar New Year has been more bustling and busy than ever. Peach blossoms, apricot blossoms, kumquat blossoms, orchids… even red parallel sentences, and lucky red envelopes have been decorated in the most central aisles of many supermarket chains in Canada.

According to Dr. Tran Thu Quynh - Commercial Counselor, Vietnam Trade Office in Canada, Lunar New Year is one of the most important festivals in Canada - where the Asian community accounts for 20% of the population. Although half a world away from Hanoi, traditional customs during the traditional New Year are still preserved, developed and introduced to international friends by overseas Vietnamese.

For Dr. Tran Thu Quynh, Tet At Ty 2025 is probably a special occasion because: "This is the third Tet that I have celebrated New Year's Eve in a multi-ethnic country, and it is also the first Tet away from home with all my relatives by my side." And this is certainly the most fulfilling Tet for Dr. Tran Thu Quynh after many years of "being an ambassador", although celebrating Tet far away, she is reunited with her family and relatives; New Year's Eve has green Chung cake, fatty meat, pickled onions, red parallel sentences... Tet far away also becomes near.

Similar to the land of the stars and stripes, as in Vietnam, these days, the atmosphere of Lunar New Year has also filled every home of the Vietnamese community. In the hustle and bustle of the last days of the year, Mr. Do Ngoc Hung - Commercial Counselor, Head of the Vietnam Trade Office in the United States - shared that, in addition to being a bridge to promote trade cooperation between the two countries, trade offices are also responsible for preserving, promoting and popularizing Vietnamese cultural identities.

Therefore, everything, every stage of Tet preparation in the United States is looking back to the roots. From preparing lucky money envelopes, parallel sentences... to the custom of wrapping banh chung, banh tet, gio, nem has been and is being organized by the Vietnamese community here so that everyone can experience and remember the Vietnamese Tet.

“I love and miss Vietnamese Tet with peach blossoms, kumquat trees, apricot trees, green Chung cakes, pickled onions... On this side of the world, Tet still brings the taste of home,” Mr. Do Ngoc Hung shared.

Happy New Year but don't forget your duty

If in the country, the traditional Lunar New Year is a time to rest and wish a happy new year to relatives, friends and family, then for those working in market development, taking on the task of "contributing to increasing the presence of Vietnamese goods in the local area, calculated by the specific import turnover value each year", Tet is an opportunity to promote and introduce Vietnamese culture, goods and cuisine to ministries, branches, associations and partner businesses; at the same time, it is an opportunity for trade counselors and heads of trade agencies to meet and connect with overseas Vietnamese businessmen as well as international businesses.

Fish sauce, rice paper, shiitake mushrooms, peanut candy, cashew nuts, dried fruit jam and coffee are always the top choices of the Vietnam Trade Office in Canada in Tet gift bags to send to customers and partners” - Dr. Tran Thu Quynh informed and shared that on the occasion of Tet At Ty this year, with lychee imported into the Canadian supermarket system for the first time, overseas Vietnamese and international friends can also enjoy lychee dessert with coconut jelly, reminding them of the taste of their homeland.

Not only stopping at promoting cuisine, many trade agencies and Vietnamese embassies abroad are also busy preparing fairs and Vietnamese Tet cultural spaces to promote goods and connect the Vietnamese community on the occasion of the traditional Tet holiday of the nation.
