British Storm Shadow missiles useless without US positioning information

British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles will become useless after the US stopped providing intelligence to Kiev.

The Daily Mail reported: "There are fears that Britain's long-range Storm Shadow missiles have been rendered useless in Ukraine after President Donald Trump banned the sharing of US intelligence with allies."

US intelligence is needed to guide the missile, receiving target coordinates just before launch.

Storm Shadow is a long-range air-launched cruise missile jointly developed by the United Kingdom and France. The French call it the Long Range Autonomous Missile System (SCALP). The missile has been in service with the British and French air forces since 2003.

The Storm Shadow/SCALP missile can be launched from Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale, Mirage 2000 and Tornado aircraft – popular fighter jets in the British, French, Italian and many other European air forces. This type of missile has been used in British and French military campaigns in Iraq, Libya and Syria.

The missile has a launch weight of 1.3 tons, is 5.1 m long, uses a turbojet engine, and can be guided by an inertial navigation system (INS), satellite positioning system (GPS) and terrain reference system (TRN). The missile has a range of about 250 km.

According to the Independent, after being launched from an aircraft, the Storm Shadow/SCALP missile will lower its cruising altitude to avoid detection before locking onto the target with an infrared seeker. In the final phase before approaching the target, the missile will fly up again to maximize the chance of hitting the target.

On impact, the penetrator warhead explodes and penetrates the target before a delay fuse activates the main warhead. The missile can reach speeds of up to 1,000 km/h.

According to British media, each Storm Shadow missile costs up to nearly 1 million USD.

In September 2024, Russian experts began a more detailed study of the components of the Storm Shadow/SCALP cruise missile shot down in the Ukrainian battlefield.

Images of North Korea's "flying radar" plane appear

North Korea is continuing to develop a new airborne early warning and control (AEW) aircraft, now equipped with an antenna. Satellite images of the “flying radar” have been published in 38 North.

The image released shows an Il-76 military transport aircraft parked on the airfield near the hangar. The aircraft is equipped with a radar antenna on the upper part of the fuselage. In previous photos, the aircraft only had the antenna brace.

Analysts say the North Korean aircraft's antenna does not rotate and comprehensive visibility is provided by three separate radar systems with a 120-degree field of view.

AWACS aircraft are designed to detect enemy targets on the ground, on the water and in the air from a distance, as well as attack them with weapons.

UK tests new deep-diving drone

An underwater technology demonstrator built for the Royal Navy to pave the way for future XLUUV ultra-large unmanned underwater vehicles has been launched in Plymouth.

According to Naval News, testing of the prototype will begin next month. The experimental underwater vehicle was built by MSubs as part of the CETUS project. MSubs was awarded a related contract worth £15.4 million in November 2022.

The CETUS project is funded through the UK’s Spearhead anti-submarine warfare (ASW) programme. The development aims to reduce the risks associated with future procurement of large underwater drones and their payloads, while allowing the Royal Navy to test potential applications of the XLUUV, including anti-submarine warfare, intelligence and surveillance.

The autonomous submersible is 12m long, 2.2m in diameter and weighs up to 25 tonnes when fully loaded with a test load. The MSubs product is said to be the largest and most sophisticated unmanned underwater vehicle purchased by a European navy to date.

In addition to testing various payload modifications, the CETUS project also aims to test manned vehicle-to-vehicle operations. In its current configuration, the prototype submersible can operate at sea for five consecutive days, or even longer with increased onboard battery capacity.

The world's leading naval powers, including the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, Japan and Germany, are developing large-scale unmanned underwater vehicles of the XLUUV class. However, only a few of them are implementing projects to improve the combat capabilities of such devices, which are limited to surveillance and reconnaissance systems. Even the famous American weapon ORCA has a limited combat capability of laying mines.

India and China have announced the development of the XLUUV combat vehicle. In June 2023, at the MADEX exhibition in Busan, the Korean company Hanwha Ocean presented a project for a super-large unmanned underwater vehicle with two torpedo tubes. In January 2024, Naval Group signed a framework agreement with the French Directorate General for Armaments (DGA) to design, manufacture and test the UCUV unmanned underwater combat vehicle.
