What makes these streets around the world so great? Is it the plethora of restaurants, bars, and cafes you can spend hours in and out of? Or the independent shops selling products you can’t find anywhere else? Or just the general feeling of warmth and friendliness you get from the street?

Time Out magazine recently compiled a list of the world's best streets today, evaluating factors including food, drink, culture, nightlife and sense of community.

To create the 2024 lineup, Time Out magazine compiled a list of their favorite streets in their respective cities.

Claiming the top spot is Melbourne's bustling High Street, with Time Out editor Leah Glynn praising Melbourne for its "great restaurants, bars, live music venues and boutiques", all of which evoke "a warm sense of community that matters to everyone".

This isn't the first time a Melbourne-based street has made it onto Time Out's list. Melbourne's Gertrude Street and Smith Street have previously featured in Time Out's rankings.

The presence of Melbourne's streets in Time Out's rankings shows that Melburnians have plenty of options to experience on the crowded streets with a variety of cuisine, culture and fun.

"Where people want to spend time"

Melbourne's High Street is located in the south-east of the Australian coastal city.

Time Out magazine praised the street for its “unique local businesses with something for everyone”, from Casa Nata, which sells delicious Portuguese custard tarts, to 1800 Lasagne, a post-Covid restaurant that is now a popular pasta spot with outdoor seating.

The High Street is also a great place to hit the bars, suggests Time Out, particularly "intimate and exclusive" rooftop bars like Gigi Rooftop and the buzzing dance venue Francesca's Bar.

Gigi Rooftop founder and CEO Marco Finanzio said he first opened the bar on the High Street 14 years ago and at the time he hoped the area would become an iconic destination.

Mr Finanzio also added that he "loves the streets and the community here very much".

“This recognition is a fantastic achievement for so many local businesses – who have worked tirelessly to serve local people, overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic and rising living costs to create a vibrant high street that is one of the world’s leading destinations,” said Marco Finanzio.

Meanwhile, Ben Mathieson, Owner of Francesca's Bar, said: "What's special is that people now know how great our street is. The neighbours are all independent, locally owned businesses. You won't find any big corporate brands here, it's a great mix of hospitality, live music, retail, health and all the businesses support each other."

“We wouldn't be here without the wonderful locals,” he said.

Coming in second on Time Out's 2024 list is Hollywood Road in Hong Kong, home to great restaurants including Michelin-starred eatery Tate, as well as cultural landmarks like Man Mo Temple and the Mid-Levels Escalator, the world's longest covered outdoor escalator.

Meanwhile, third place goes to East Eleventh in Austin, Texas. On East Eleventh Street, Vintage Bookstore & Wine Bar is considered the ideal place to enjoy a drink and read a new book, while Kenny Dorham's Backyard is the perfect place to enjoy live music.

The streets of the world are changing

Time Out magazine also noted that some of the world's busiest streets have changed for the better in recent years, with many becoming "more walkable and more interesting places to spend time".

"Eating and drinking outdoors was once a temporary measure but has become a regular feature on many of our favourite streets. Encouraging pedestrianisation is also a green initiative on low-traffic high streets," Time Out magazine suggests.

For each street on the list, Time Out magazine suggests fun things to do, such as practicing yoga at Ardha Bikram Yoga on Guatemala Street in Buenos Aires (number 4) or drinking natural wine at the small bar Small Shifting Space on Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur (number 6). Time Out magazine says the aim of the list is to celebrate "the avenues, streets and backstreets where local life really thrives".
