Open-pit coal mining at a unit of Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group (TKV).
After the Lunar New Year holiday, on the morning of January 6, TKV's coal mining units simultaneously launched their spring production, some units started early on the 4th day of the Lunar New Year; power units even organized production throughout the Lunar New Year. During the nine-day Tet holiday, TKV's units mined nearly 100,000 tons of raw coal, imported 87,700 tons, and consumed 392,000 tons of coal.
Complete all targets
Along with other units in the Group, on January 6, Thong Nhat Coal Company launched a campaign to strive to fully complete production and business targets. In the first shift, 420 miners went to work, reaching 90% of the workforce, although many of them came from far away places such as the Northwest or Central regions.
Company Director Nguyen Manh Toan commented that in recent years, Thong Nhat Coal has entered the Group's "2 million ton club". This year, the company was assigned the target of producing 2 million tons of raw coal, digging 12,000m of tunnels, earning VND2,660 billion in revenue, and nearly VND36.6 billion in profit. The company strives to increase the average income of its employees to more than VND20 million/month.
In increasingly difficult production conditions, with targets at an all-time high, the company has prepared early to ensure safe mining conditions from the fourth quarter of 2024. Entering the new year, the mining and tunneling workshops have smoothly caught up with the production flow.
Miner Nguyen Van Nam, Tunnel Digging Workshop 3 (Thong Nhat Coal Company) said that in 2024, the workshop's working conditions faced many difficulties, some tunnel mirrors had high temperatures, affecting the health of workers; most of the mirrors had high pressure, requiring large amounts of materials to be transported in for reinforcement. However, the workshop had dug more than 1,600m of tunnel, reaching 96.58% of the plan, cutting 581m (reaching 129%); the average income of workers reached 21 million VND/month.
Over the past years, TKV has focused its resources on implementing deep development projects to maintain the life and increase mine capacity; in which, the Mine Construction Company is the main unit in TKV's tunneling work.
In 2024, the company dug more than 20,000 m of tunnel, with revenue of more than 1,300 billion VND, and average income per worker reaching 19.5 million VND/month. Director of the Mine Construction Company Le Trung Toan said that in order to complete the goal of digging more than 20,100 m of new tunnel in 2025, meeting production requirements, the company has fully prepared construction measures with reasonable technical and technological solutions, promptly adapting when the tunnel faces have geological changes.
The company gives high priority to speeding up the progress of tunneling for the Group's deep mining projects. At the same time, it continues to invest in mechanization, automation, and investing in EBH-45 tunneling machines to increase productivity and improve working conditions for workers.
In the early days of the new spring, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions, TKV's open-pit coal production units have maintained sufficient manpower, machinery and equipment to concentrate on extracting coal from underground mines, meeting the coal demand of the market. This year, Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company has planned to excavate 60 million m3 of earth and rock, exploit 4.7 million tons of coal, and consume 4.66 million tons.
At the company's quarry on the first working day of spring, production teams excavated 130 thousand cubic meters of waste rock and soil, mined 12 thousand tons of coal, and consumed 18,000 tons. In January, the company excavated more than 3.2 million cubic meters of rock and soil; mined more than 300 thousand tons of coal, and consumed more than 363 thousand tons.
Provide enough coal for the economy
In 2025, TKV strives to produce 36.85 million tons of coal and consume 50 million tons. It is expected that the group will import 13.2 million tons of coal, dig a total of more than 264,000 m of tunnels, and earn a revenue of more than 172 trillion VND,...
This year, TKV believes that it will welcome many new opportunities, but also face many challenges, requiring miners to continue to uphold the tradition of "Discipline and Unity", striving to exceed the tasks assigned by the Party and State.
Comrade Ngo Hoang Ngan, Party Secretary, Chairman of the Board of Members of TKV
Accordingly, focus on production and processing to provide enough coal for the economy, especially supplying power plants during the dry months; promote investment, start mining projects, etc.
In 2024, providing enough coal for Vietnam Electricity Group's power plants is a challenge and a significant pressure for TKV, because the geological conditions of exploitation give rise to many unfavorable factors, reducing coal production.
In particular, storm No. 3 (Yagi) caused severe damage to coal production units, many factories, mines, and warehouses were damaged, hundreds of hectares of trees planted on mine waste dumps were broken, and widespread power outages forced many units to temporarily suspend production for many days.
With efforts to overcome difficulties, TKV has basically completed the production and business targets for 2024, with an output of more than 38 million tons; consumption of more than 46.7 million tons, of which coal supplied for electricity production reached 39.4 million tons. TKV continues to affirm its pivotal role in the economy, paying the state budget 25.5 trillion VND, of which, the budget payment in Quang Ninh is estimated at 17.6 trillion VND, equal to 111% of the annual plan.
In the first days of the new spring, the weather is very favorable for coal mining activities. TKV General Director Vu Anh Tuan has asked member units to focus on boosting production, effectively applying mechanization to increase labor productivity, improve working conditions and income for workers, striving to achieve more than 52% of the yearly plan in the first six months.
To meet the coal demand of the economy, TKV is continuing to seek customers, expand import-export markets, import coal from Laos, increase imported coal output on the basis of well-prepared conditions for warehouses, transportation, and blending. Along with that, the longshore furnaces are prepared to mobilize output to ensure the completion of the coal exploitation plan.
According to the Coal Industry Development Investment Strategy for the 2021-2025 period approved by the Government, TKV focuses on prioritizing resources for large-capacity underground mines according to the criteria of "Green mines, modern mines, high-capacity mines"; connecting open-pit mines and underground mines into large-capacity mines (open-pit mines with a capacity of more than 3 million tons/year; underground mines with a capacity of more than 2 million tons/year).
In the 2021-2025 period, TKV strives to exploit more than 195 million tons of coal. To achieve this goal, TKV proposed that Quang Ninh province report to the Prime Minister for permission to use the national energy master plan for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to grant licenses for mineral exploration and exploitation; at the same time, approve TKV to adjust domestic coal prices for electricity production in 2025; continue to remove obstacles in the process of project implementation, land management procedures, etc.
