Creating momentum for a successful new coal season.

The coal industry has just concluded its 90-day intensive production campaign for the fourth quarter of 2024, creating momentum for continued success in the new coal season. Entering 2025, the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (TKV) aims to produce over 36.8 million tons of coal and consume 50 million tons, guided by the motto and objectives of "Safety - Unity - Development - Efficiency".

Following the Lunar New Year holiday, on the morning of the 6th day of the first lunar month, TKV's coal mining units simultaneously launched their spring production activities. Some units started early, as early as the 4th day of the Lunar New Year; power generation units even continued production throughout the holiday. During the nine-day holiday, TKV's units mined nearly 100,000 tons of raw coal, imported 87,700 tons, and consumed 392,000 tons of coal.

Complete all targets.

Along with other units in the Group, on January 6th, Thong Nhat Coal Company launched its campaign to comprehensively fulfill all production and business targets. In the first shift, 420 miners were on duty, reaching 90% of the workforce, even though many came from distant regions such as the Northwest or Central Vietnam.

According to Nguyen Manh Toan, Director of Thong Nhat Coal Company, in recent years, the company has joined the Group's "2 million tons club". This year, the company has been assigned a production target of 2 million tons of raw coal, excavating 12,000 meters of tunnels, achieving a revenue of 2,660 billion VND, and a profit of nearly 36.6 billion VND. The company strives to raise the average income of its employees to over 20 million VND per month.

In the face of increasingly challenging production conditions and ever-higher targets, the company made early preparations to ensure safe mining operations starting from the fourth quarter of 2024. Entering the new year, the mining and tunneling workshops have smoothly adapted to the production pace.

According to miner Nguyen Van Nam from Tunneling Workshop 3 (Thong Nhat Coal Company), in 2024, the workshop faced many difficulties in working conditions. Some tunnel faces had high temperatures, affecting the health of workers; most faces had high pressure, requiring the transportation of large quantities of materials for reinforcement. However, the workshop excavated more than 1,600 meters of tunnels, achieving 96.58% of the plan, and reinforced 581 meters (achieving 129%); the average income of workers reached 21 million VND/month.

Over the years, TKV has focused its resources on implementing deep mine development projects to maintain the lifespan and increase the capacity of mines; in which, the Mining Construction Company is the main unit in TKV's tunnel excavation work.

In 2024, the company excavated over 20,000 meters of tunnels, generating revenue exceeding 1.3 trillion VND, with an average employee income of 19.5 million VND per month. According to Le Trung Toan, Director of the Mining Construction Company, to achieve the goal of excavating over 20,100 meters of new tunnels in 2025 and meet production requirements, the company has fully prepared construction methods with appropriate technical and technological solutions, adapting promptly to geological changes in the tunnel faces.

The company prioritizes accelerating the tunneling progress for the Group's deep-mining projects. At the same time, it continues to invest in mechanization and automation, including the EBH-45 tunnel boring machine, to increase productivity and improve working conditions for employees.

In the early days of the new spring, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions, TKV's open-pit coal production units have maintained sufficient manpower and equipment to focus on extracting coal from the mines, meeting market demand. This year, Cao Son Coal Joint Stock Company has set a plan to excavate 60 million cubic meters of overburden, mine 4.7 million tons of coal, and sell 4.66 million tons.

At the company's opening day of work after the Lunar New Year holiday, production teams excavated 130,000 cubic meters of waste rock, mined 12,000 tons of coal, and sold 18,000 tons. In January alone, the company excavated over 3.2 million cubic meters of waste rock; mined over 300,000 tons of coal, and sold over 363,000 tons.

Ensuring sufficient coal supply for the economy.

In 2025, TKV aims to produce 36.85 million tons of coal and consume 50 million tons. The group is expected to import 13.2 million tons of coal, excavate a total of over 264,000 meters of tunnels, and generate revenue exceeding 172 trillion VND.

This year, TKV anticipates many new opportunities and challenges, requiring miners to continue upholding the tradition of "Discipline and Unity," striving to exceed the tasks assigned by the Party and the State.

Comrade Ngo Hoang Ngan, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Board of Members of TKV.

Accordingly, the focus should be on production and processing to ensure sufficient coal supply for the economy, especially for power plants during the dry season months; and on boosting investment and commencing mining projects, etc.

In 2024, ensuring sufficient coal supply for Vietnam Electricity Group's power plants was a significant challenge and pressure for TKV (Vietnam Coal Corporation), due to unfavorable geological conditions at the mining sites, which reduced coal production.

In particular, Typhoon No. 3 ( Yagi ) caused severe damage to coal production units, with many workshops, mines, and warehouses damaged, hundreds of hectares of trees planted on mine waste dumps broken and uprooted, and widespread power outages forcing many units to temporarily suspend production for several days.

Through its efforts to overcome difficulties, TKV has basically completed its production and business targets for 2024, with a mining output of over 38 million tons; consumption of over 46.7 million tons, and coal supplied for electricity production reaching 39.4 million tons. TKV continues to affirm its pivotal role in the economy, contributing 25.5 trillion VND to the state budget, of which the budget contribution in Quang Ninh is estimated at 17.6 trillion VND, equivalent to 111% of the annual plan.

In the early days of the new spring, the weather was very favorable for coal mining operations. TKV General Director Vu Anh Tuan requested member units to focus on boosting production, effectively applying mechanization to increase labor productivity, improve working conditions and income for workers, and strive to achieve over 52% of the annual plan in the first six months of the year.

To meet the coal needs of the economy, TKV is continuing to seek customers, expand import and export markets, import coal from Laos, and increase imported coal production based on good preparation of warehousing, transportation, and blending conditions. At the same time, the coal mining areas have been prepared in advance and are ready to mobilize production to ensure the completion of the coal mining plan.

According to the Coal Industry Development Investment Strategy for the period 2021-2025 approved by the Government, TKV prioritizes resources for large-scale underground mines based on the criteria of "Green mines, modern mines, high-production mines"; and integrates open-pit and underground mines into large-capacity mines (open-pit mines with a capacity of over 3 million tons/year; underground mines with a capacity of over 2 million tons/year).

During the 2021-2025 period, TKV aims to mine over 195 million tons of coal. To achieve this goal, TKV proposes that Quang Ninh province report to the Prime Minister to allow the use of the national energy master plan for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to grant licenses for mineral exploration and exploitation; and to approve TKV's request to adjust the domestic coal selling price for electricity production in 2025; and to continue resolving obstacles in project implementation and land management procedures, etc.
