On November 28 in Hanoi, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Vietnam held a ceremony to celebrate World Children's Day 2023, calling for strengthening mental health care strategies to support children.

According to a UNICEF survey, many Vietnamese adolescents are struggling with mental health difficulties due to a lack of coping skills and necessary support services.

Therefore, Vietnamese children, adolescents, parents and teachers need skills and resources to promote mental health.

Deputy Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Ha spoke at the ceremony.

The 2022 survey report shows that about 21.7% of adolescents (aged 10-17) have mental health problems. Of these, anxiety disorders are the most common, accounting for 18.6%, followed by depression... But only 8.4% of children have accessed support or counseling services for emotional and behavioral problems.

Notably, only 5.1% of parents of adolescents perceived their child as needing mental health help.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha, Deputy Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, said: “This year’s World Children’s Day has the theme “Promoting positive mental health means bringing a better life to children.” I hope that ministries, departments, agencies, and organizations will pay more attention and take positive actions to improve children’s mental health with practical and sustainable solutions.”

Responding to World Children's Day 2023, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha emphasized the need to strengthen communication and education on parenting knowledge and skills, including attention to mental health care and children's psychosocial care for parents and family members to detect early and reduce psychological trauma for children.

In addition, it is necessary to improve services for children's mental health and psychosocial care; review, supplement and perfect legal regulations and policies related to support for children's mental health and psychosocial care; strengthen psychological work and school counseling...

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha affirmed that World Children's Day is the time when the whole world turns to children and carries out activities for children. This is a day of action to advocate for policies and social movements aimed at raising awareness of the most urgent issues facing children.

What we are doing contributes to giving children a comprehensive development, a good start, ensuring the implementation of children's rights, providing them with opportunities to develop, and confidently stepping into the future.

Sharing about the situation of child care, especially the mental health of Vietnamese children after the COVID-19 pandemic, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha added that the Prime Minister issued Directive No. 36/CT-TTg on strengthening solutions to protect and care for children affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; the program on Child Mental Health Care and Orphan Care for the 2023-2030 period is also being submitted to the Prime Minister for approval.

Ms. Rana Flowers, UNICEF Representative in Viet Nam shared that it is essential that all parents, teachers, social workers, health workers, and the Government take action to eliminate the stigma around mental health. It is necessary to understand the differences between boys and girls in their experiences and responses to mental health.

UNICEF encourages countries to focus on early intervention, developing appropriate strategies to build resilience skills and enhance children's mental health.

At the event, experts analyzed the mental health situation of children and adolescents; affirmed that creating a safety net, preventing child abuse, eliminating risks from schools, social evils, and domestic violence are important issues to protect children.

Many ideas and supportive lessons were shared frankly, contributing positively to the development of a dynamic and sensitive national strategy for children and adolescents.
