On the afternoon of March 1, the People's Committee of Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province sent a press release to the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department, Nghe An Department of Information and Communications and press agencies about the suspected case of "embezzlement" of donation money at the altars in the historical relic site of Ong Hoang Muoi temple, Hung Thinh commune, Hung Nguyen district.
Previously, public opinion was stirred up when the press reported that some officials on duty at Ong Hoang Muoi Temple were suspected of taking donations.
According to information published in the press, after visitors leave money on the altar, someone will collect it and put it in the donation box.
However, there was another person who took money from the altars and stuffed it into a pre-opened cookie box, then brought it home and hid it in his personal bed.
After receiving the information, the People's Committee of Hung Nguyen district directed the relevant authorities to conduct verification, and through verification confirmed that the information published by the press was true.
The incident was initially determined as follows: according to the management board's operating regulations, the shifts on duty are responsible for collecting oil drops from the altars and putting them in the safe (oil drop bucket).
During the shift on February 25, the management board, including 6 members of the management board, the working team and the security team, collected donation money (oil money) from the altars to put in the safe and the incident as reported by the press occurred.
To verify and clarify the incident and handle appropriately the individuals and organizations that committed violations according to the reported information, the People's Committee of Hung Nguyen district has established a verification team, temporarily suspended the work of two related individuals, and installed surveillance cameras at the place where the donation money seal box was placed to ensure management and supervision.
"After receiving the investigation and verification results from the competent authority, the management board will advise the Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Nguyen district on appropriate handling measures in the spirit of not covering up violations, and handling violations to the extent of the extent," the report stated.
In June 2013, the head of the management board of the historical and cultural relic of Ong Hoang Muoi Temple was discovered to have regularly sent people to transport donation money to hire outsiders to count it.
After that, the authorities of Hung Nguyen district stepped in to reform the temple management board and protect the annual revenue from donations.
Since 2014, the amount of donations has increased dramatically, averaging 11 billion VND/year instead of 1.5 billion as in previous years.

Ong Hoang Muoi Temple was ranked as a historical and cultural relic by the People's Committee of Nghe An province in 2002; and recognized as a spiritual and cultural tourist destination in 2018. Notably, in 2019, Ong Hoang Muoi Temple Festival was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
In the first days of the spring of Giap Thin, tens of thousands of people and tourists from all over the country came to Ong Hoang Muoi Temple to pray for health, peace and luck.
