According to Euro News, Antalya Mayor Muhittin Bocek said efforts were underway to rescue 184 people trapped in the cable car. According to Bocek, rescuers using ropes and helicopters worked through the night at the scene to save the trapped people.
Five injured people have been airlifted off the mountain and efforts are underway to evacuate the remaining two, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. Images on Turkish media showed the damaged cable car hanging from a broken cable on the side of a rocky mountain as medics tended to the injured.
April 12 was the last day of a three-day holiday in Turkey marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which sees families flock to coastal resorts. The cable car took tourists from Konyaalti beach to a restaurant and viewing platform at the top of the 618-meter-high Tunektepe peak.
