Artist Trinh Minh Tien with his work Thuy Phu has just won the highest prize in the first UOB Painting of the Year competition in Vietnam. Through his special work spray-painted on a car hood, Minh Tien cleverly highlights the contrast between man-made heritage and the impermanence of time and memory.

As the top winner of the Established Artist category, artist Minh Tien received a cash prize of VND500 million and will compete for the prestigious UOB Painting of the Year award in Southeast Asia in 2023 with winning artists from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
The UOB Painting of the Year Southeast Asia Awards will be announced on 8 November in Singapore.
Artist Trinh Minh Tien shared that through Thuy Phu , he wanted to convey the concept of impermanence. Using airbrushing techniques, he skillfully recreated the image of Hanoi Cathedral reflected on the hood of a car wet with rain.
Minh Tien describes the work: “Water represents flexibility, constant change, and impermanence. Water also means washing, harmonizing, and soothing, washing away dirt, creating the source of creativity and healing. Phu means a place to live, symbolizing the geographical element. I hope that traces of what is glorious are buried and what exists are healed and mended by water. As life develops at an increasingly fast pace, we become more fragile and vulnerable, so we should cherish the present value even more.”
