“Vietnamese contemporary art has a long-standing foundation, with many generations of master painters, so Vietnamese artists are completely confident to participate in regional competitions and exhibitions, with courage, talent and a new perspective on the art life” - this is the affirmation of painter Dang Xuan Hoa, Head of the Jury at the opening ceremony of the 2nd UOB Painting of The Year art competition held in Hanoi.

Painter Trinh Minh Tien won a high prize at 'UOB Painting of the Year'.
In the first time, this competition found 4 typical artists and 4 potential artists in contemporary art practice. Notably, artist Trinh Minh Tien won the highest award at the UOB Painting of the Year competition, with the work "Thuy Phu", depicting the architectural mark of the Great Church (Hanoi). Artist Luong Xuan Doan - Head of the jury of the first UOB Painting of the Year competition in Vietnam shared that the winning work in 2023 was highly appreciated for its uniqueness in expression techniques, going beyond the framework of traditional painting when experimenting with new materials, conveying profound messages.

The faces of some artists honored at the first competition.

As the Head of the Jury of the 2nd UOB Competition, artist Dang Xuan Hoa said: “Entering the second year, I began to see the atmosphere of new art in our country, gathered by a group of artists who dare to experiment. To reach the top, it takes a process. The competition is not a milestone to evaluate their career because there are people who disappear afterwards. Art is strict with the artist himself and only when they are a part of the art can they succeed” - artist Dang Xuan Hoa affirmed.
Artist Trinh Tuan, member of the jury, founder of Asia Art Link - a community organization that organizes many international exhibitions and workshops in Vietnam and many countries around the world, said: Our young artists have full capacity but are sometimes shy in international activities. When we step out, we have to comply with the requirements of those activities, which means we have stepped out of the "safe" zone. Therefore, he hopes that the activities of the Asia Art Link group or UOB will help young artists have a new artistic environment outside the studio.
UOB Painting of the Year is a long-standing annual art competition in Singapore, launched in 1982, to promote arts and culture in the region and showcase the talents of established and emerging artists. To date, the competition has discovered over 1,000 artistic talents in Southeast Asia.
The second UOB Painting of the Year art competition in Vietnam hopes to receive support and participation from young artists with new thinking, modern art styles, unique styles, personalities and identities, originating from Vietnamese traditions. Authors can submit works created in the last two years. The deadline for submissions is August 1. The top winner in Vietnam will receive a prize worth VND500 million and have the opportunity to compete for the UOB Southeast Asia regional award.
