Nguyen Ngoc Thien is the only Vietnamese author to win the "International Ocean Photography 2023" contest, in the categories of World Coral Reefs and Marine Animal Portraits.

The results of the contest were announced by the Ocean Geographic Society (OGS) and the Oceanographic magazine (OG) in early June. Accordingly, photographer Nguyen Ngoc Thien is the only Vietnamese author whose photos won prizes, including second prize in the category "Coral reefs in the world", with the work "Hon Yen Coral Garden" taken in the sea of Phu Yen and an encouragement prize in the category "Animal portrait" with the work "Puffer fish and plastic cup" taken during a diving trip in the Nam Du archipelago, Kien Giang.
Vietnam currently has about 1,100 square kilometers of coral reefs. Hon Yen is also home to a rich ecosystem both underwater and on land with high biodiversity. Research results in 2022 by the Vietnam - Russia Tropical Center (Ministry of National Defense) recorded 22 species of coral belonging to 7 families at Hon Yen, many species are only recorded in the waters of Phu Yen province, typically soft corals belonging to the Alcyoniidae family and top hole corals (genus Lobophytum).
"The coral photos become more impressive when capturing the ocean waves that separate the unique landscape between two worlds - above water and underwater at the same time in the same frame, using the underwater split-shots technique," Thien described the technique of taking the second prize winning photo.

The International Ocean Photography Competition is held annually, honoring the most impressive works related to the ocean, thereby conveying knowledge and spreading the message of environmental conservation and ocean ecosystems.
2023 is the 10th year the contest has been held, including 17 photo categories: coral reefs around the world, marine animal behavior, marine animal portraits or the connection between humans and the ocean... The total prize is worth 90,000 USD.
