Many people prefer animal protein such as eggs and red meat. However, research from Harvard University (USA) found that reducing animal protein and increasing vegetable protein can bring many benefits, especially reducing the risk of heart disease.
The study analyzed health data from more than 200,000 people. They were surveyed about their diets every four years. During the 30-year follow-up period, the research team recorded more than 16,000 people with heart disease. Of these, more than 10,000 people had coronary heart disease and about 6,000 people had strokes, according to the health website Healthline (USA).
Eating foods rich in plant protein can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease
Research has found that increasing plant protein intake significantly reduces the risk of heart disease. Specifically, people who increase their intake of plant protein to animal protein at a ratio of 1:2 have a 19% lower risk of heart disease and a 27% lower risk of coronary heart disease.
Additionally, people who ate the most plant protein in the study had a 28% lower risk of heart disease and a 36% lower risk of coronary heart disease.
Animal protein is essential for the body because it provides essential amino acids for muscle growth, tissue regeneration and overall health maintenance. Animal foods rich in protein include red meat such as beef, pork and lamb, chicken, duck, eggs, milk, fish, shrimp, squid, octopus, animal organs...
However, many research evidences show that eating too much red meat and processed meat can increase the risk of heart disease. The main reason is that red meat is high in animal fat, eating too much will increase the concentration of "bad" LDL cholesterol, forming atherosclerotic plaques, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease. Eating too much processed meat is not good for health because it contains a lot of salt, preservatives and increases the concentration of "bad" LDL cholesterol.
To reduce these effects, experts recommend that people reduce their intake of red meat and processed meat and replace it with protein-rich plants such as beans, nuts, mushrooms, whole grains and some vegetables. These foods are not only rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber but also antioxidants that help prevent cancer, according to Healthline .
