Female doctor in accident has difficulty recovering her legs
On the morning of May 12, speaking with Giao Thong Newspaper, Dr. Tran Quang Trung (Department of Spinal Neurosurgery, Hanoi Medical University Hospital) said: Today, Ms. Ly is awake and talking, but still not stable. The patient has a collapsed lung, so the pleural drainage is still being performed; the doctors are monitoring to remove the pleural drainage tube, then she will practice sitting and rehabilitation exercises.
The Coffee House, where the unfortunate accident occurred, leaving a young female doctor seriously injured.
For Ms. Ly, the biggest injury is her paralyzed legs, and her incontinence. According to Dr. Trung, paralysis of both legs is difficult to recover from.
Ms. Ly was transferred to the emergency room in a state of multiple injuries, multiple fractures of the vertebrae, spinal cord injury causing complete paralysis of both legs, multiple rib fractures causing closed chest trauma, hemothorax, bilateral pneumothorax, and abdominal trauma.
Specifically, she suffered a slipped vertebrae that compressed her thoracic and lumbar spinal cord, causing complete paralysis of both legs and loss of sensation from the chest down. In addition, Dr. Ly's abdomen was also severely damaged when the diaphragm ruptured, causing abdominal organs to escape into the chest. The chest injury caused multiple rib fractures and severe respiratory failure.
Doctors at Hanoi Medical University Hospital performed emergency surgery to patch the diaphragm. Two weeks later, they performed another surgery to stabilize the spine and relieve spinal cord compression to minimize long-term consequences.
The family has no comment on the compensation.
Expressing his exhaustion after many stressful days of staying by his child's side in the hospital, Mr. Hoang Thanh (Ly's father) told a reporter from Giao Thong Newspaper: Ly is still very weak, although she can communicate slowly. The family does not understand the profession, so now the treatment depends on the doctors. The family only knows that treatment for her injury will take a long time.
Regarding the information that The Coffee House proposed to compensate more than 100 million VND to Dr. Ly's family for the unexpected accident that happened at the shop, Mr. Thanh said: Currently, the family has no opinion on that matter, because they are focusing all their heart and soul on Ly's treatment. All the expenses for Ly's treatment are still just advances, the total cost is not clear.
It is known that on the evening of April 20, Ms. Hoang Minh Ly (29 years old, from Nghe An province, currently working at K Hospital) was drinking coffee with friends at The Coffee House on Thai Ha street, Trung Liet ward, Dong Da district, Hanoi.
