Having dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, becoming the valedictorian of his entire course majoring in medical laboratory technology was a big surprise for Nguyen Trieu Nam (born 2001, Hanoi) and his family.

Since high school, he set a goal of becoming a doctor. Every day, he chose to go to school through the gate of Hanoi Medical University to see his dream.

In 2019, Nam only scored nearly 25 points in the B00 block (Math, Chemistry, Biology) on his high school graduation exam. However, this score was not enough to pass the medical doctor program at Hanoi Medical University as desired.

His parents advised him to change his wishes to other medical schools such as Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy... However, in the end, Nam still decided to choose Medical Laboratory Technology "because he had fallen in love with Hanoi Medical University for a long time".

Entering the first year of university, although it seemed difficult, Nam easily overcame it with excellent academic performance "thanks to his basic knowledge, ability to absorb quickly and determination to learn".

Recalling memories of the time he got used to student life, Nam shared: "The first time I stepped into the Biology lab was also the first time I learned how to use a microscope.

Until now, I still remember by heart the instructions of my teachers: "Put the lens to rest, turn off the light, rotate to the x4 objective, raise the condenser to the maximum, lower the specimen table to the maximum, remove the slide, clean the lens and cover it with the cover".

After that, he had a chance to practice in the Chemistry lab. Nam and his friends used reagents to identify substances. This was something completely new that in previous levels of education we only knew through theory and books. From then on, he became more and more excited about his field of study.

During the study, the teachers in the department always support and answer all the students' concerns and questions. From the second year, Nam started to practice at hospitals when studying pathological anatomy. However, in the third year, due to the strong outbreak of the epidemic, he and his friends had few opportunities to practice at hospitals.

Nam understands that internships at major hospitals are the best opportunities to comprehensively update knowledge and practical professional skills. Medical laboratory technicians are the first to come into contact with patient samples, viruses, and bacteria.

At first, when he went to practice, Nam was a bit scared, especially when performing tests on samples of human tissue. However, during the learning and practicing process, Nam gradually got used to it, especially later, when exposed to infectious samples such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nam and his friends were able to stay calm when dealing with highly infectious samples.

Before coming into direct contact with clinical specimens, Nam was exposed to previously controlled similar specimens, and his teachers helped him familiarize him with a safe approach for himself and his colleagues.

During his internship in microbiology and parasitology, Nam was able to complete the entire testing process from start to finish, so he became more interested in this field. Because there were few documents related to this field, Nam mainly searched for documents in English.

Being valedictorian of the entire course is Nam's greatest achievement. During his studies, Nam received scholarships from the school and organizations outside the school.

After graduating, Trieu Nam continued to pursue his studies with the dream of becoming a lecturer at the school he attended.

The Hanoi male student also said that as soon as he entered the university environment, he was determined to register for the English Club (EC). Thanks to that, he met his brothers, sisters and companions throughout the time they worked together. This is a favorable environment for Nam to exchange knowledge, expand his life experience and gain many valuable experiences.

Outside of school, Nam often chats with his friends and shares his dreams and plans for the future. Most of Nam’s friends think that studying medical testing is unlikely to lead to a high salary and stable job.

"I am aware that this job may not bring a high salary, and may even be stressful and difficult due to the complex nature of the industry. However, I still believe that if I am proactive and work hard to improve my professional skills, success will come," the new valedictorian shared.

During the last two years of study, thanks to his good academic results, Nam was able to participate in a number of research projects with teachers in the department. Along with the learning process, scientific research helped Nam have a more complete view of his field of study. It was also from these research participations that Nam's determination to become a graduate student gradually grew.

Sharing about his future plans, the new valedictorian of Hanoi Medical University revealed that he is striving to pursue graduate studies to have the opportunity to become a lecturer at the very school he attended. "In the near future, I will look for scholarships and graduate training programs in countries that I love, both satisfying my academic pursuit and having the ability to explore the world more," the young man expressed his determination.
