Ma River 'eats' hundreds of meters of shore

VnExpressVnExpress23/09/2023

Thanh Hoa More than 12,000 square meters of agricultural land of 29 households in Vinh Hoa commune, Vinh Loc district was swallowed by the Ma river.

On the last day of September, Mr. Pham Ngoc Khiem, 70 years old, and a group of people in Nghia Ky village, Vinh Hoa commune, went to the corn field in front of the village, anxiously looking towards the Ma River. Occasionally, the pieces of land in front of him collapsed into the riverbed, leaving behind deep, murky whirlpools.

Having lived in Nghia Ky village for more than 60 years, Mr. Khiem clearly understands the rules of sedimentation on both river banks. In the past, the river banks had some areas that eroded and some that silted up, but the erosion was not significant. In recent years, the erosion has been "terrifying". The river banks are now hundreds of meters inland in some places.

The large riverside alluvial land that used to be Mr. Khiem's family's agricultural land has now been completely "swallowed up". He is worried about the lives of his family and the villagers because the landslide is getting longer and longer, now less than 100 meters from the residential area.

Mr. Nguyen Van Truy, Chairman of Vinh Hoa Commune, said that the Ma River bank began eroding from 2017 until now, stretching 600 m through two villages Nghia Ky and Dong Giang, causing the loss of 12,000 m2 of agricultural land. In the early period, the Ma River encroached 7-10 m inland each year. Since the beginning of August until now, the erosion has been happening rapidly due to heavy rain and hydroelectric dams releasing floodwaters.

Currently, along the alluvial plains of Nghia Ky and Giang Dong villages, there are many cracks, the landslide edges are 5-7 m high above the water surface, and there is a risk of further landslides.

Thanh Hoa provincial authorities said the main cause of the landslide was that Vinh Hoa commune is the confluence of the Ma River and the Buoi River, with relatively complex currents and weak geological structure because it is formed from sand and alluvial soil.

According to local people, sand mining along the river is the cause of the landslide. A report by the People's Committee of Vinh Loc district shows that of the 600 m of landslide along the Ma River bank through Vinh Hoa commune, 200 m passes through sand mine No. 18 of a business. At marker No. 5, the largest landslide width is 25 m, 150 m from the residential area of Nghia Ky village.

In addition, there are two landslide points downstream of sand mine No. 18. Point one has a landslide arc length of about 100 m, width of 35 m, and is 90 m from the residential area. Point two has a landslide arc length of 80 m, width of 35 m, and is about 120 m from the residential area.

The People's Committee of Vinh Loc district is requesting Thanh Hoa province to set up a team to inspect and assess the cause of the landslide. In addition, the local government also proposed to promptly and thoroughly remedy the incident by constructing anti-erosion embankments, preventing damage to crops and avoiding causing panic among the people.

In order to ensure the safety of the people, Vinh Hoa Commune People's Committee has installed cameras to monitor activities on the river, stretched ropes, and put up danger warning signs. The government also recommends that people do not produce or raise livestock in locations with high risk of landslides.
