On the afternoon of March 14, at the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to reporters' questions about citizen protection in the case of Vietnamese crew members working on the Barbados-flagged True Confidence ship attacked by Houthi forces in the Red Sea, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said:
Regarding this incident, the Vietnamese Embassy in Egypt and Djibouti has been closely coordinating with local authorities, domestic authorities, the company that dispatched the crew member, and the victim's family to urgently carry out funeral procedures for the deceased crew member and soon bring the crew member's body back to Vietnam according to the family's wishes.
According to the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry also coordinated with Vietnamese representative agencies in relevant countries to carry out consular procedures to help the three crew members return home as soon as possible.
Expressing her deepest condolences to the family of the deceased crew member, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has discussed with domestic authorities and shipping companies employing Vietnamese workers to ensure maximum safety for sailors and comply with international warnings about dangerous and risky schedules; directed representative agencies in countries in the conflict zone to continue monitoring and updating the situation and security developments in the area, and prepare citizen protection plans if necessary.
* Also at the press conference, answering reporters' questions about citizen protection in Haiti, in the context of the continuing deterioration of the security situation in this Caribbean country, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said: According to information from the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba and Haiti, the violence in Haiti escalated very quickly and became extremely complicated, causing many deaths and injuries.
Faced with this situation, the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba and Haiti has implemented many citizen protection measures such as: Recommending on the Embassy's official social network instructions on measures to ensure security and safety for citizens; assigning embassy staff to be on duty 24/7 to keep in regular contact with the Vietnamese community in Haiti to continuously update information; coordinating with local authorities and diplomatic missions in the area to deploy necessary citizen protection measures.
According to the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the number of Vietnamese people in Haiti is currently around 70 - 80. Up to now, according to the latest information, the situation of Vietnamese people in Haiti is still safe.
Following the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba and Haiti continues to closely monitor the situation, keep in touch with the Vietnamese community in Haiti, develop citizen protection plans in accordance with the developments of the conflict, and protect the safety of Vietnamese citizens in Haiti.
Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that Vietnamese citizens should not travel to areas where conflicts are occurring. Vietnamese citizens in the area need to closely monitor the situation, proactively take necessary safety measures, strictly comply with regulations of the local authorities, and immediately contact the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba and Haiti or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Citizen Protection Hotline when in need of assistance.
