A COUNTRY CAN SEND UP TO… 7 TEAMS TO THE TOURNAMENT
If Man.City do not win at Real Madrid in the second leg of the play-off this week, the Premier League will be weakened in the Champions League. Other major leagues such as La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 have all had teams eliminated from the 3 European cup competitions (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League) this season. That means no country has a clear advantage before the European cups officially enter the knock-out stage.
Man.City (left) lost 2-3 to Real Madrid at home at Etihad Stadium in the first leg of the 2024 - 2025 Champions League play-off.
The "coefficient" race between major tournaments has thus become more attractive and unpredictable. This is the race for the 5th place in the Champions League next season. According to the established structure, the 5 national championships with the highest positions in the UEFA rankings (based on the achievements of the clubs in European cups in the last 5 seasons) are each given 4 places in the Champions League. The 2 national championships with the highest "coefficient" points (based on the achievements of the clubs in 3 European cups this season alone) are each given 1 additional place in the Champions League next season - and that is the race for the "5th place".
According to the existing rules, the Champions League winners and the Europa League winners will both qualify for next season's Champions League. If these teams have already qualified for the Champions League through their domestic rankings, their tickets cannot be transferred to other teams. So, in theory, a country can have up to 7 teams in next season's Champions League: 4 "customary" teams, team number 5 (if the country finishes first or second in the "coefficient" race this season), the Europa League and Champions League winners (provided that these two teams are outside the top 5 in their national championship. This is the first time that UEFA has not controlled the number of representatives for next season's Champions League for each country, and it is also the first time in history that a country can send up to 7 teams to the Champions League (possible in theory).
" THE 5TH PLACE" IS NOW BEYOND ANH AND WEST BAR
Each win of a club in the 3 European Cups is counted as 2 points for the national championship (or country) they represent, each draw is 1 point. If there is extra time, the result is counted in 120 minutes (excluding penalty shootouts). The points of all clubs in the same country are added together, plus the total bonus points of that country, then divided by the number of teams, to get the "coefficient" points of that country for this season.
Each team in the Champions League gets 6 bonus points at the start of the tournament. The 24th-placed team in the Champions League "league" gets 6.25 bonus points (including the initial 6 points). From there, each step gets 0.25 bonus points (the highest in the league is 12 bonus points). In the Europa League, the 24th-placed team gets 0.25 bonus points, up to the highest team getting 6 bonus points. In the Conference League, the 24th-placed team gets 0.125 bonus points, up to the highest team getting 4 bonus points. For every round, each team gets 1.5 bonus points in the Champions League; 1 bonus point in the Europa League; 0.5 bonus points in the Conference League.
Up to now, England (20,892) and Spain (18,035) are the two countries leading in "coefficient" points in the 3 European cups this season. Next are Italy (17,687), Germany (15,421), Portugal (15,350), France (14,214), Belgium (13,550), Netherlands (13,250)... According to Opta's computer, the Premier League currently has a 99.5% chance of owning the 5th place in the Champions League next season. Italy has a 66.9% chance. Next is Spain (31%). Of course, this is just pure analysis and prediction. Last season, England also led the "coefficient" race with a clear advantage, but in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, all Premier League teams failed. In the end, the "5th place" went to Germany and Italy (Borussia Dortmund and Bologna benefited, being in the Champions League this season). The major leagues, especially the Premier League, will explode with excitement if they succeed in the race for the 5th place in the Champions League next season.
