The National Press Awards Council has just held the opening ceremony of the preliminary round of the 18th National Press Awards - 2023 this afternoon (April 16) in Hanoi. Notably, this year there were 1,905 entries submitted to the award, reaching the highest number ever.

Head of the Professional Department of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Ms. Do Thi Thu Hang, said that the National Press Awards received the participation of 18/21 Inter-Association Branches, 30 affiliated Branches, and 63/63 Provincial and Municipal Journalists Associations. The organization and implementation of this year's awards at all levels of the Association were mostly carried out in an orderly and effective manner.

“However, due to the late Lunar New Year holiday this year, along with preparations for the National Press Festival and several important conferences of the Vietnam Journalists Association, the submission of entries for the award was later than usual and some Association levels did not follow the instructions,” said Ms. Hang.

Although the works were sent to the organizing committee late, the Secretariat of the Award has completed the work on schedule, achieving the best possible quality. To date, all preparation stages have been carried out in accordance with the award regulations and on schedule with 1,905 works submitted for the award, continuing to reach the highest level ever. Of these, 127 works have the participation of authors who are not members of the Vietnam Journalists Association.

The Secretariat of the Award has pre-screened 78 works and included 1,827 works that are eligible to participate in the preliminary round according to regulations. With this number, this year's works have increased significantly compared to last year's award, which was 1,774 works eligible to participate in the award.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Permanent Vice President of the National Press Awards Council, and Chairman of the Preliminary Council, said that although the preliminary selection of works had been carried out seriously and strictly by the Award Secretariat, due to the large volume of works submitted to the Award and the limited time, there were certainly still omissions in the screening process.

The Chairman of the Preliminary Council requested the Council to base on the Award Regulations and selection guidelines to evaluate the works, ensuring that the works selected for the final round are of good quality and comply with the established regulations.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Loi also noted that this year, the National Press Awards Preliminary Judging Council has the same structure as last year, however, the council members have changed and adjusted in the direction of innovation and inheritance; many members are participating in judging the National Press Awards for the first time.

“The jury members need to promote their professional spirit and responsibility, be thorough and impartial in evaluating the works, contributing to the success of the most prestigious press award for Vietnamese journalists,” the Chairman of the Preliminary Council emphasized./.
