On the morning of November 8, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development held a conference to review animal disease prevention and control work in 2023 and propose tasks for animal disease prevention and control in 2024.
In 2023, livestock production in the province continues to face many difficulties and challenges in terms of disease and market prices. Extreme weather conditions are favorable for pathogens to develop, causing African swine fever to re-emerge in a complicated manner from mid-April 2023 and persist in some localities.
The total herd of buffaloes and cows is estimated at 48.18 thousand heads, up 0.52%; the herd of pigs is estimated at 280 thousand heads, up 0.7%; the herd of goats is estimated at 24 thousand heads; the herd of poultry is estimated at 6.705 million heads, up 2.35% over the same period in 2022.
In recent times, support for people whose livestock and poultry have been destroyed has been implemented promptly and in accordance with regulations by local authorities. The support has helped people quickly restore their herds and production.
However, resources for disease prevention and control are still limited, beyond the capacity of localities, requiring support from the Central Government. Many localities no longer have veterinary staff positions, many veterinary staff have to hold concurrent positions, affecting the implementation of disease prevention and control and vaccination.
The conference listened to the dissemination and proposed a number of tasks for disease prevention and control in the coming time, discussed and asked for delegates' opinions on support regulations such as: Subjects, conditions; support levels for owners of production facilities, livestock, poultry, aquatic product enterprises and people participating in disease prevention and control. Tighten quarantine work, strictly control the slaughtering and trading of pork and pork products at small-scale slaughterhouses, markets, food collection and trading points. Continue to promote decentralization associated with the allocation of funding sources for localities to proactively implement solutions and measures for disease prevention and control suitable to the reality of each locality.
