Dr. Do Van Can, Head of the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Central Children's Hospital, said that cleft lip and cleft palate are the most common congenital defects occurring in the face and mouth. These children will have a normal face if treated at the right time. Treatment for children with cleft lip and palate is a long-term process with many procedures such as lip and palate surgery, speech therapy, orthodontics, bone correction, and cosmetic surgery when they grow up. "With this free examination and treatment, Smile Train and the hospital continue to raise awareness for families with children with cleft lip and palate about the comprehensive treatment process for children," said Dr. Can.
Ms. Tran Huyen Trang, Director of Smile Train Vietnam, said that with the on-site support model for partner hospitals, Smile Train not only aims to perform many surgeries, but also commits to accompanying hospitals to improve treatment capacity, ensure safety and bring the highest quality of treatment, including pre- and post-operative care. This is one of the surgeries that not only costs a lot but also requires perseverance from families with children with disabilities. According to doctors, congenital cleft lip and palate defects leave many serious consequences such as: difficulty eating, susceptibility to ear, nose, throat, respiratory diseases, speech defects... especially affecting aesthetics, can cause self-consciousness, and reluctance to communicate.
Children with cleft lip and palate have many difficulties in eating and daily activities.
Since 2007, Smile Train has provided comprehensive cleft lip and palate care and free treatment to nearly 30,000 Vietnamese children. In addition, the organization has equipped hundreds of local surgeons and health professionals with the knowledge and skills to improve their practice through training programs, funding, and other forms of resource support.
Most recently, from June 12 to 16, the National Children's Hospital, Smile Train and Columbia University, USA, organized an intensive training course on speech therapy for children with cleft lip and palate with more than 30 students from Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar.
