Binh Dinh To allow Quy Nhon port to receive large ships, the Ministry of Transport will dredge 3.8 million cubic meters of mud and sand and dump them into the sea at a location nearly 12 km from shore.
The location to submerge 3.8 m3 of mud and sand from the Quy Nhon port channel renovation and upgrade project to receive 50,000-ton ships has just been agreed upon by the People's Committee of Binh Dinh province with the investor, the Maritime Project Management Board (Ministry of Transport).
Accordingly, the dumping point is located more than 15 km from Quy Nhon port, 21 km from Eo Gio and nearly 12 km from Cu Lao Xanh. The dumping and submergence area is about 100 hectares in Quy Nhon sea area, divided into many small areas. The sand and mud will be transported by suction ships and sloping platforms. Upon arrival, the ships will open the discharge gates to submerge the mud and sand.

Although the location of the dumping site has been agreed upon, Binh Dinh province is still concerned that dredging, transporting and submerging the site could cause pollution and affect the exploitation, aquaculture and marine tourism. Therefore, the investor is requested to supplement the environmental impact of the project on the marine conservation planning area, as well as the results of a survey of the current status of benthic ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass beds, etc. in the submerged area and surrounding areas to assess the impact on benthic organisms.
In addition, the locality also wants the investor to carefully assess the possibility of dispersing polluting substances; have solutions to reduce the impact on the aquaculture area of Hai Minh fishing village people, the tourist beach in Quy Nhon city and commit to compensation if there is any damage.
In addition, the provincial government is concerned that dredging at a depth of 11-13 m could cause coastal erosion, especially in the area of seaports and Mui Tan embankment. Therefore, the investor is requested to specifically assess the risk of erosion and come up with solutions to limit it; at the same time, there is a plan to regulate ships entering and leaving the port during the project implementation.
Quy Nhon is an old port of Binh Dinh province. Currently, the port can only receive ships of 30,000-50,000 tons. After being upgraded, Quy Nhon waterway will be able to receive ships of 50,000-70,000 tons.
The Quy Nhon Port Channel Renovation and Upgrade Project was approved by the Ministry of Transport in 2021 with a total capital of about 700 billion VND. The Maritime Project Management Board was assigned as the investor. When implementing the project, the port will be dredged and renovated with a channel of more than 7,000 m long, 140 m wide, and 13 m deep. It is expected that about 3.8 million m3 of material, mainly mud and sand, will be dredged.
