According to information from the Department of Telecommunications (Ministry of Information and Communications), based on the policy and orientation to stop 2G mobile technology and popularize smartphones, the Ministry of Information and Communications and telecommunications enterprises will deploy control and prevent the connection of 2G devices to mobile telecommunications networks.
Specifically, from March 1, 2024, 2G land-based mobile phones that are not certified to comply will not be allowed to connect to mobile networks.
The network operator will not allow new mobile phones that only support 2G technology (2G Only) and are not on the List of 2G phones certified to comply with regulations announced by the Ministry of Information and Communications to be imported into the network.
The Department of Telecommunications also said that to implement this policy, mobile telecommunications businesses are responsible for widely communicating to their customers and at the same time announcing contact points for handling complaints.
According to the Telecommunications Department, if there are questions or complaints about 2G phones not being connected to the network, people need to call the network operator's customer care center for support and guidance.
Sharing with VietNamNet , a Viettel representative said that before the official announcement from the Ministry of Information and Communications, Viettel proactively informed customers, recommending to quickly check whether the SIM and phone in use support 4G or not to make the conversion as soon as possible.
Viettel has launched many incentive programs for 2G subscribers to switch to 4G. Specifically, this unit has launched many lines of feature phones and cheap 4G smartphones, accompanied by unprecedented incentive policies.
Accordingly, Viettel Telecom will subsidize up to 50% of some low-cost 4G models with calling features (from only 290,000 VND/device). For users who successfully switch to 4G and use smartphones, they will be given 28GB of high-speed data and free data when watching the TV360 application.
To prepare for the 2G shutdown plan, Viettel has covered 4G widely, to all rural, mountainous and island areas. This unit also tested 5G broadcasting in many provinces/cities across the country, ensuring that people will not have interrupted communication when 2G technology is officially stopped.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Tinh, Deputy General Director of Viettel Telecom, said that turning off 2G waves is a very correct policy, in line with the trend and needs of customers and society in the current period.
“ This is an important turning point in the development of telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam as well as the key to opening up digital life, a digital future with many new utilities and opportunities for people, ” Mr. Tinh emphasized.
VNPT VinaPhone network said that to meet the management agency's request to stop 2G waves, VinaPhone has prepared a suitable roadmap and widely communicated to customers, at the same time, has policies to support customers in switching.
“ In all cases, VinaPhone has prepared plans to ensure the rights and not affect the customer experience when turning off 2G waves ,” the network representative affirmed.
Since 2015, when 2G still accounted for about 60% of network traffic, VNPT has determined a strategy and developed a plan to turn off 2G waves. In the past 2 years, VNPT has proactively turned off individual stations that generate little or no traffic.
According to a representative of VinaPhone, this unit has turned off the signal of about 10% of its 2G stations. VNPT has developed a plan and solutions to convert all subscribers and devices to only support 2G network by September 2024 according to the direction and orientation of the Ministry of Information and Communications.
