The conference aims to provide technology solutions and management strategies to help cities modernize infrastructure, develop smart and sustainable services for residents; and is positioned to be a prestigious annual destination for smart city experts in the region and the world.
Smart cities (SMCs) have become a global urban development strategy, focusing on digital transformation, applying advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), and big data to solve urban management challenges, actively improve people's living conditions, increase happiness, economic development, and environmental protection.
Smart cities are not only a model for urban development but also a strategy to promote economic growth and improve the quality of life. In Asia, many countries such as South Korea, Japan and Singapore have built model smart cities, focusing on applying AI, IoT, and renewable energy technologies to solve urbanization and climate change problems.
Initiatives such as the Busan Hi-Tech Park in South Korea and Singapore’s Smart Nation project are examples. According to AIJMR, by applying AI to public transport in Singapore, waiting times for trains and buses have been reduced by 33-50%. Barcelona has improved waste collection routes with IoT sensors, reducing the operating costs of its waste collection network by 20%. Amsterdam has saved 15% of its fossil fuels through smarter energy analysis and allocation.
Smart cities have also been closely concerned by the leaders of the Government, Ministries and branches. On August 1, 2018, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 950/QD-TTg: Approving the Project on sustainable smart urban development in Vietnam for the period 2018 - 2025 and orientation to 2030; with the specific goal that by 2030, "to form smart urban chains in the Northern, Central, Southern regions and the Mekong Delta, with Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang City and Can Tho City as the core, forming a network of smart urban connections".
To date, 48 out of 63 provinces and cities in Vietnam have implemented smart city projects. Although cities in Vietnam have made great progress, challenges still exist in terms of finance, resources, and infrastructure synchronization. This conference will be an opportunity to share experiences from cities in the region, while connecting investors and strategic partners to develop sustainable smart urban development solutions.
