The first "ambassadors"

Tran Huong Lan, who has just become an alumnus of the Institute of Engineering and Computer Science , VinUni University, is preparing for a flight to Switzerland. Lan will be going to the Swiss Federal Polytechnic University (EPFL), a world-class university specializing in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and natural sciences.

Lan was awarded an EPFL Master Research Scholar scholarship to pursue a master's degree in computer science, participating in research at the Machine Learning for Education lab at the School of Computer Science and Communication, EPFL. It is known that the EPFL Master Research Scholar scholarship program is very competitive. Every year, out of about 1,000 applicants, only about 15 people are selected.

After the graduation ceremony, Tran Huong Lan (left cover) and Bui Khanh Nam (middle) both had their destinations at prestigious universities.

Lan said that many of her classmates at the Institute of Engineering and Computer Science continue to pursue academic careers. For example, a close friend of Lan's, Bui Khanh Nam, will soon go to the US to study for a PhD in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a world- leading university for PhD training in engineering.

Cao Gia Bao, another former classmate of Lan, chose to go to a place closer to Vietnam, Singapore. Cao Gia Bao was accepted into the research engineering program at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU), with a large Southeast Asian language modeling project. Bao did not disclose his salary, but according to those "in the know", professors at NTU usually pay research engineers a salary of about 5,000 USD/month.

Lan, Nam, Bao… are all members of a brand new organization, just established 2 days ago, the VinUni Alumni network. VinUni Alumni currently has 145 first members, who are students of the first course and have just received their graduation degrees from VinUni University.

According to Dr. Le Mai Lan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VinUni University, in the future, VinUni will continue to have hundreds, thousands of new graduates each year. But the first 145 graduates will forever go down in history as the founding generation of students, paving the way, laying the first bricks for the future of VinUni.

The VinUni Alumni Network was established to connect, support career development and enhance social responsibility through the cooperation and contributions of alumni. Moreover, according to Professor David Bangsberg, President of VinUni University, the future efforts and successes of VinUni Alumni will build and spread the reputation of VinUni.

The people who will answer the world's big questions

Professor Glen Gaulton, Vice Provost and Director of Global Health, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Director of the UPenn - Vinmec - VinUni cooperation alliance, said that more than 6 years ago, he flew to Hanoi to have lunch with Dr. Le Mai Lan and a few others to discuss the potential cooperation between UPenn and Vingroup in helping Vietnam build VinUni University. At that time, the place where VinUni is now located was still a rice field.

However, at that time, Professor Glen Gaulton and his colleagues at UPenn shared a common vision to create a university in Vietnam that would meet the standards of prestigious universities in the world. Those standards were dedication to knowledge, the pursuit of scholarship, building an environment that encourages open thinking and exchange, tolerance and empathy, and most importantly, the application of those capacities in practice to build a better world.

Now, looking at what VinUni has achieved, especially with the first graduating class, UPenn sees that it can look forward to the ability to realize the initial expectations of both sides.

According to Professor Glen Gaulton, the world today is facing problems where its stress is at its peak. Too many people live in poverty, hunger and the burden of disease is constant. "I seem to be too old to solve these problems. And now is the opportunity for VinUni graduates," said Professor Glen Gaulton.

Speaking about VinUni students, Professor Glen Gaulton added: "We have chosen them for their intelligence, their love of learning, and their compassion. We expect VinUni alumni to take full advantage of the knowledge they have learned and the abilities we hope to continue to nurture in them to solve these problems, to build a better world. They should not be satisfied with simply making a good living, having a nice house or a car. Instead, they must ask and solve the big questions in life."

Global competition

Dr. Le Mai Lan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of VinUni University, said that among the newly graduated graduates (145 students), 25% have received invitations to continue their master's and doctoral studies at prestigious Ivy League schools in the US such as Harvard University, Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania... and other prestigious universities around the world.

32% have been invited to work by global corporations such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, National Australia Bank, Google, Bosch, IBM... and leading Vietnamese enterprises, technology corporations and financial institutions with attractive remuneration and career paths, even before graduation. Among them, some students receive remuneration of up to 7,500 USD/month for working abroad (equivalent to the remuneration of local bachelors of prestigious universities).

Recently, a famous global corporation recruited 3 people. They received applications and interviewed hundreds of excellent candidates, including many candidates who had studied abroad. However, in the end, all 3 recruited people were final year students (who had not yet received their diplomas) of VinUni.

Dr. Le Mai Lan said: "VinUni can be proud that the quality of VinUni's academic training is initially conquering the most prestigious international universities. VinUni can be proud that the practical ability of VinUni graduates is gradually conquering the most prestigious employers, competing equally with graduates of prestigious universities around the world."

According to Mr. Hoang Minh Son, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, VinUni University has affirmed its position as one of the young and dynamic universities, with remarkable progress in training, scientific research and international cooperation.

"VinUni has been training generations of excellent students with the ability to compete globally," said Mr. Hoang Minh Son.
