Khanh Hoa Many young shoots have grown on the broken coral reef in the western area of Hon Mun, Nha Trang Bay, after many years of damage.

On February 3, Mr. Dam Hai Van, Deputy Director of Nha Trang Bay Management Board, said that the area west of Hon Mun where the coral was broken is now recovering, with many young shoots growing, mostly of the Acropora genus (hard corals that form reefs). Due to the slow biological growth characteristics, this species of coral only grows about one centimeter per year.

According to the Nha Trang Bay Management Board, the 2021 storm damaged most of the coral ecosystem in the bay. In addition, in recent decades, the earth's climate and sea temperature have increased, causing coral bleaching, which has seriously affected the ecosystem here.

At the end of 2022, Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has a plan to restore Nha Trang Bay, which has received support from people and businesses. The management board regularly inspects and monitors the coral reef ecosystem, cleans the seabed in the Hon Mun area such as catching crown-of-thorns starfish, picking up trash; stops diving tourism in some places that can easily damage corals, and imposes heavy fines on some illegal fishing vessels...

After a year, the coral around Hon Mun has recovered with "many encouraging signs". Currently, the northwest and north of the island still have reef-building coral species, mostly Porites and Millepora dichotoma. Coral coverage ranges from 30-50%, up from the previous 10-20%.

To contribute to the restoration of the ecosystem in Nha Trang Bay, last year, Khanh Hoa authorities released 12,000 fish fry of various types and sea cucumbers into Nha Trang Bay; planted 2.5 hectares of mangrove forests on Dam Bay Island, alluvial plains along Cai River, Tac River, and Quan Truong River.

Nha Trang Bay is nearly 250 km2 wide, one of 16 marine reserves in the country. It has many corals and the richest and most diverse ecosystem in Vietnam, famous diving sites, attracting tourists to dive and see the ocean floor.
