Recently, social networks have been "passing around" a photo of a tourist standing precariously on top of a giant stone dragon's head at Thuy Tien Lake Water Park (Hue City, Thua Thien-Hue).
The image of a male tourist climbing on top of the dragon structure was taken in July 2023.
According to Thanh Nien reporter's verification, the above photo was taken in July 2023, the main character is a foreign male tourist.
A security guard who witnessed this moment said that the male tourist climbed up to the dragon's head via a small staircase inside the dragon's mouth. When he reached the top of the head, the male tourist calmly checked in and walked around, making many witnesses "drop their hearts". This moment was captured by someone present there.
"I have seen many reckless Western tourists climb on top of the dragon's head to take pictures. Such situations require careful handling. If you blow the whistle and startle them, they will easily fall, so you only dare to gently remind them and advise them to come down. If something happens, the ones who suffer the most are our security forces," said the guard.
Recorded on January 23, although the gate was closed, Ho Thuy Tien water park still attracted a lot of tourists, most of whom were foreigners.
The giant stone dragon structure, over 50m high, is the symbol of the abandoned water park Thuy Tien Lake.
In front of the park gate, the management unit, the Land Fund Development Center (Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Thua Thien-Hue Province), has put up a sign prohibiting visitors from entering or leaving. However, many foreign tourists travel by motorbike, following a small trail to get inside.
A French tourist shared that he was very curious about this place because he had previously read many documents and articles about the giant stone dragon. "I found this structure to be mysterious and crazy, and when I got here, I wanted to explore inside even more," this tourist shared.
Many foreign tourists come to Thuy Tien Lake to see the dragon statue.
Many tourists visiting the stone dragon here also pose a series of potential dangers, because this structure is seriously deteriorating. The spiral stone staircases, nearly 1 meter wide, leading from the foot to the dragon's mouth have degraded, the railings are rusty, and some sections are broken, revealing large holes...
Some tourists climbed into the dragon's mouth to check-in.
The Director of the Land Fund Development Center (Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Thua Thien-Hue province) said that in the near future this giant stone dragon project will be demolished.
Mr. Truong Phuoc Tuan, Director of the Land Fund Development Center (Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Thua Thien-Hue Province) said that although there was a winning bidder for this project, up to now Thuy Tien Lake is still under the management of the unit. Although there are prohibition signs, recently many tourists still enter the area without permission, the large terrain makes management very difficult.
Notably, Mr. Tuan said that the dragon statue will be demolished by the winning bidder in the near future. "Thuy Tien Lake Park already has a winning bidder, and the dragon statue at this water park will also be demolished in the near future to serve a community project," Mr. Tuan said.
Thuy Tien Lake Water Park was invested with more than 70 billion VND on an area of about 20 hectares of land in Thuy Bang Ward (Hue City). However, due to unfinished investment, this place did not attract tourists and was abandoned for many years.
In 2016, this address suddenly appeared in famous newspapers such as the US Huffington Post; the US television channel CNN newspaper put the lake in the list of 10 world-famous amusement parks that are breathtakingly beautiful, but have been "closed forever"... Thuy Tien Lake also appeared in international music videos and is also a "check-in" address considered "not to be missed" by many foreign tourists when coming to Hue.
