The Sturgeon Moon, the full moon that will occur on August 19, ET, is called a blue moon because of an astronomical feature.

There are two types of blue moons: monthly blue moons (the second full moon) and seasonal blue moons (the third of four full moons in the same astronomical season). Since the summer solstice on June 20, there have been full moons on June 22 and July 21. There was the Sturgeon Moon on August 19 and the next full moon, the “Harvest Moon,” on September 18.

According to NASA, blue moons of both types occur every two to three years. The most recent seasonal blue moons were in October 2020 and August 2021, and the next seasonal blue moon will occur in May 2027, according to timeanddate.com.

The Sturgeon Moon will also be bright and full on Sunday and Tuesday, and will be best seen as it rises above the eastern horizon on Monday. You won't need binoculars or a telescope to view the full moon, but having one will help you see details on the moon's surface that are not visible to the naked eye.

The July full moon is named after the sturgeon found in the Great Lakes at this time of year, according to timeanddate.com. The Anishinaabeg people call the July moon Minoomini Giizis, which means “Grain Moon (Wild Rice),” according to the Center for Native American Studies.

This month's full moon is a supermoon. Each month, the moon reaches its closest point to Earth, called perigee. When perigee coincides with a full moon, it's a supermoon.
