Recently, Vietnamese people as well as people around the world had the opportunity to admire the rare "super Blue Moon" lighting up the night sky. This August full moon is special because it is the first super moon of 2024, also a rare Blue Moon.

Blue Moons are a purely cultural thing in many Western countries, experts say. There are two different definitions of a Blue Moon, and both have to do with the introduction of full moons into our modern calendars: A seasonal Blue Moon is the third full moon in an astronomical season with four full moons; a monthly Blue Moon is the second full moon in a calendar month with two full moons. Meanwhile, a supermoon is more common than a Blue Moon and is simply any full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest distance to Earth, according to NASA. There will be four consecutive supermoons this year that we can observe.
When will we see the "super blue moon" again?
The Blue Moon on August 20 in Vietnam was a seasonal Blue Moon. After that, Vietnamese people will have to wait until May 31, 2026 to be able to admire the monthly Blue Moon. The next seasonal Blue Moon will occur in May 2027. However, when will there be both a supermoon and a Blue Moon?

According to Space.com , the next supermoon, which is a monthly Blue Moon, will occur on January 31, 2037. But the next "super Blue Moon" as a seasonal Blue Moon will occur on August 20, 2032. We'll have to wait at least eight years for the next "super Blue Moon." According to Timeanddate.com , many astronomy enthusiasts have probably heard the phrase "once in a blue moon." So how often do Blue Moons occur? They happen about every two or three years. Seasonal Blue Moons occur less frequently than monthly Blue Moons. When we add up the Blue Moons in the 1,100 years from 1550 to 2650, there are 408 seasonal Blue Moons and 456 monthly Blue Moons, according to experts.
