Sharing with the press after the victory over Dominic Thiem on January 2, Nadal could not hide his joy: "I played solidly, without making many mistakes. I think I was right in choosing the shots I had to make. It was difficult after a long time and I feel satisfied.
My approach is just to try to enjoy every day that I get to play. If I can play more matches it will help me recover and get back to competing with the top players.
My goal is still medium term, trying to get back to my best in a few months. At the moment, if I can compete, that's great. Today was a positive day and I will try harder tomorrow."
In the second round of the Brisbane International, Nadal will face Australian tennis player Jason Murray Kubler on January 4. In another notable match, world number 8 Holge Rune will face Shevchenko at 5pm on January 3.
Alongside the Brisbane International 2024, the United Cup 2024 team tennis tournament is also taking place with great excitement.
After two consecutive wins in the group stage, the Serbian team will face host Australia in the quarterfinals, including one men's singles match, one women's singles match and one mixed doubles match.
Novak Djokovic will face De Minaur in the men's singles match at 4pm on January 3. In the two most recent confrontations at the Australian Open, Djokovic overwhelmingly defeated De Minaur.
