Garbage "invades" Lai Xa Industrial Park

(HNMO) - Garbage is thrown haphazardly around the entrance and exit, spilling onto internal roads; a giant landfill with a lot of garbage that has been left for a long time... - That is the reality that reporters recorded on May 27 and 28 at Lai Xa Industrial Park (Hoai Duc district, Hanoi ).

The mountain of garbage has been accumulated since February 2023 at the Garbage Collection and Transfer Area inside Lai Xa Industrial Cluster.

For a long time, the problem of illegal dumping has been quite common in the Lai Xa Industrial Park area, causing serious environmental pollution. A typical example is the road area between New City Building and Thanh Do University, which is also the entrance to the internal road surrounding Lai Xa Industrial Park.

The road is about 150m long but is "suffocated" by all kinds of trash thrown indiscriminately. Trash is not only thrown all over the sidewalk, but also piled up on the road. The median strip in the middle of the road with beautiful rows of trees and flowers is also made ugly by plastic bags and trash mixed in with the grass. Fires caused by spontaneous burning of trash have burned part of the grass under the trees. Inside the internal road of Lai Xa Industrial Park are many piles of trash, construction waste, old broken items...

Going deeper into the Industrial Park is the collection and transfer site for domestic waste of the people of Lai Xa village, Kim Chung commune. According to Ms. Hoang Thi Lien, a resident of Lai Xa, the garbage has been collected for many months but has not been moved, and each day a layer is thicker. The area around the Industrial Park has also become a place to dump garbage, emitting a foul smell and breeding flies, polluting the environment and affecting the health of people living in the area.

Responding to this situation, Director of the Hoai Duc District Construction Investment Project Management Board Pham Gia Loc said that the unit regularly requests Thanh Cong Cooperative - the environmental sanitation unit that collects waste in the district - to immediately fix the existing problems of spontaneous garbage dumping points around the entrance, exit, and internal roads of Lai Xa Industrial Park as reported. The Board's staff directly went to the area, coordinated with the urban environmental unit to clean up littered garbage, sprinkle lime, and limit environmental pollution in the area. However, due to low public awareness, littering has recurred. Moreover, since February 7, 2023, Thanh Cong Cooperative has had to temporarily stop transporting waste to Xuan Son and Nam Son Waste Treatment Areas. Meanwhile, the amount of household waste generated in the district is about 200 tons/day, and the district does not have a centralized landfill, so it temporarily uses a transfer point in Lai Xa Industrial Park to collect accumulated waste. Up to now, there are about 3,000 tons of waste remaining at the landfill in Lai Xa Industrial Park.

On May 25, the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment allowed an increase in the amount of garbage transported to Xuan Son and Nam Son landfills, totaling 214 tons/day. Thanh Cong Cooperative has increased the number of garbage compactors to 11, operating at a capacity of 2 trips/day, and is trying to clear all the remaining garbage at the landfill in Lai Xa Industrial Park by July 31. After that, the units will no longer concentrate garbage in the district to this location, but the garbage collection and transfer site here will only serve the daily transfer of garbage.

It is known that before the above-mentioned garbage congestion, illegal dumping and throwing garbage into vacant lots in Lai Xa Industrial Park still occurred frequently due to the low awareness of some people. Therefore, after July 31, when all the remaining garbage at the landfill inside the Industrial Park is removed, relevant units such as the District Construction Investment Project Management Board, Kim Chung Commune People's Committee, and Thanh Cong Cooperative need to take measures to thoroughly prevent the throwing and dumping of garbage at the wrong time and in the wrong place. Only then can we ensure that there will no longer be a situation of garbage being dumped everywhere like today.
