Launching of memoir "Once a boat, must set sail" by late Professor Dr. Tran Hong Quan

On the morning of July 11, the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges and the family of the late Professor Tran Hong Quan held a launching ceremony for his memoir "Once a boat, must set sail".

Attending the memoir launch ceremony were Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, former member of the Politburo, former Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee; representatives of the Ministry of Education and Training, departments, agencies, units, family, relatives, intellectuals and close friends of the late Professor, Dr. Tran Hong Quan.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, generations of leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training and comrades and colleagues all recognized and highly appreciated the exemplary personality and great contributions of Professor, Dr. Tran Hong Quan to the industry.

The Deputy Minister of Education and Training assessed that in the context of the country starting to implement the difficult and challenging renovation process, finding solutions to bottlenecks and removing bottlenecks for the education and training sector is very important; thereby forming basic and consistent viewpoints for educational innovation such as diversifying, democratizing, and socializing education; education and training is the top national policy; investing in education is investing in development. Education goes ahead and effectively serves socio-economic development; education must be closely linked to the country's development requirements and in line with the progressive trends of the times; developing continuing education for everyone, building an open education and lifelong learning. The State and the people work together in education, in which the State plays a core role... These viewpoints still hold true today.

The leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training also emphasized that, in addition to his theoretical contributions, Professor Tran Hong Quan also proposed and implemented many specific policies to develop the education and training system such as: National target program on scientific research; schools linked to society and production labor; developing a system of ethnic boarding schools, building a system of teacher training schools; building standard schools for primary schools in disadvantaged areas; building schools for flood-prone areas; building student dormitories, piloting direct election of university principals, developing a system of non-public schools, etc.

"He is considered a talented politician, a successful leader, manager, researcher, and teacher, but he lives a very simple, modest, and approachable life," Mr. Phuc said.

Many intellectuals, scholars, and close friends of Professor Tran Hong Quan attended the memoir launch ceremony.

The 477-page memoir "As a boat, must go out to sea" consists of 3 parts and 1 appendix with some photos of Professor, Dr. Tran Hong Quan. Specifically, part 1: Memoir - As a boat, must go out to sea, part 2: Voice of the heart and part 3 are speeches and writings of Professor, Dr. Tran Hong Quan.

Particularly in part 3 of the memoir are 21 articles and speeches throughout the educational career of the late Professor, Dr. Tran Hong Quan. These are his viewpoints, visions, passions, concerns and worries; demonstrating the progressive thinking, ahead of the times of a talented and virtuous teacher.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Tan Phat - former Permanent Deputy Minister of Education and Training (right cover) shares stories about the late Professor, Dr. Tran Hong Quan at the memoir launch.

According to the representative of the family of Professor Tran Hong Quan, in recent years, although he did not want to talk about his life because he was modest, thanks to the encouragement of relatives and colleagues, he wrote touching and meaningful articles about his childhood, family, hometown and his arduous but glorious work process. After the passing of the Professor, his family and relatives coordinated with the leaders of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges to compile, edit, print and publish a memoir entitled " As a boat, must go out to sea".

Professor, Dr. Tran Hong Quan (1937-2023) was a member of the Party Central Committee of the 6th, 7th and 8th terms; a National Assembly delegate of the 8th and 10th terms; former Minister of Universities, Vocational Secondary Schools and Vocational Training; former Minister of Education and Training; former Deputy Head of the Central Mass Mobilization Commission; former President of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges.
