The Nicaraguan government has appointed Michael Campbell as non-resident ambassador to Afghanistan, the U.N. said on June 22.
Nicaragua's pro-government El 19 Digital news network quoted Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo as expressing gratitude to Afghanistan, its people, the government established by the Taliban and especially the movement's leader Hibatullah Akhundzada for accepting the Central American country's diplomat .
However, the Nicaraguan government's statement did not mention recognizing the Taliban government.
Mr Campbell - currently serving as Nicaragua's ambassador to China - will take on additional work from his Beijing headquarters.
With the above move, Nicaragua has become the first government in the Americas and the second in the world , after China, to appoint an Ambassador to Afghanistan - the South Asian country currently under the leadership of the Taliban.
In response to Nicaragua's move on June 25, US Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere Brian Nichols assessed that this was a typical decision by the government of the Caribbean country.
Meanwhile, the government set up by the Taliban to control Afghanistan welcomed Nicaragua's decision.
