Attending the workshop were Ms. Ngo Phuong Lan - President of VFDA, former Director of the Department of Cinema; Mr. Vu Ho - Vietnamese Ambassador to Korea; Mr. Park Kwangsu - President of Busan Film Festival; Mr. Kim Hong - Joon - Director of the Korean Film Institute; Mr. Kim Dongho - Founder, former President of Busan Film Festival; Ms. Ellen YD Kim - Director of Busan Film Festival Market, leaders and representatives of investors, film production companies, directors, international experts in the film industry in Korea.
Developing culture, promoting tourism through films
At the workshop, Ms. Ngo Phuong Lan said that VFDA was established in 2019 with the aim of supporting the development of Vietnamese cinema by consulting, proposing and building cinema policies. The association aims to promote the prosperous development of the domestic film industry while gradually integrating more deeply into the international arena.
Ms. Phuong Lan shared that the rapid development of the domestic film industry, with an annual growth rate of about 15-16% (before the Covid-19 pandemic), has made Vietnam an increasingly attractive destination for investors and film producers from Asia and the world. In recent years, VFDA has made efforts to support provinces and localities in recognizing the importance and potential of the film industry, in addition to developing culture and tourism. Most notably, VFDA has cooperated with the People's Committee of Da Nang City to organize the DANAFF Film Festival from 2023.
According to Ms. Ngo Phuong Lan, the success of VFDA is to have built the Production Attraction Index (PAI), encouraging localities to self-evaluate according to PAI criteria. PAI will help localities gradually understand the specific needs of a film crew, and at the same time be a useful bridge when creating favorable basic conditions to attract filming in the locality.
"With Vietnam's special geographical location, diverse natural landscapes and rich historical and cultural heritage such as the provinces and cities of Ninh Binh, Phu Yen, Da Nang, and Quang Ninh, it has become a particularly attractive filming location not only for domestic but also for international works," the Chairman of VFDA introduced at the workshop.
Ms. Ngo Phuong Lan added that VFDA will support international filmmakers in performing their tasks smoothly and effectively, including searching for and cooperating with Vietnamese partners, applying for licenses, securing filming locations and handling issues related to co-production in Vietnam, expanding the network in the future.
"Cinema is not only a form of cultural art but also a driving force for economic growth and international integration. Through cinema, integrated tourism promotion is effectively and quickly transmitted to global audiences. As a bridge between filmmakers and policy makers, between domestic and international film communities, VFDA is making every effort for the development of Vietnamese cinema, with the desire to attract more prestigious international film works to Vietnam. This will not only contribute to promoting national culture and cinema but also promote Vietnam's tourism industry to show off the beautiful country to the world", the Chairman of VFDA emphasized.
At the workshop, leaders of the People's Committees of provinces and cities introduced the bright spots and difficulties of Vietnamese cinema today, the filmmaking environment in Vietnam, including 4 selected localities: Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Da Nang and Phu Yen to develop the Vietnamese film industry in general, and the DANAFF Film Festival in particular. At the same time, through the workshop, Vietnam hopes to welcome producers, directors and filmmakers to Vietnam with interesting Korean film projects.
Many incentives to promote Vietnam's film industry further
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Kim Hong - Joon assessed that the Vietnamese cinema industry has developed remarkably in recent years, VFDA has organized DANAFF very successfully and is known to many international friends. He believes that the beautiful scenery of the provinces and cities will attract young filmmakers and Korean producers. Mr. Kin Hong - Joon gave an example of Da Nang city with beautiful beaches and wonderful weather, so he believes this place will be very suitable for choosing a film setting.
According to Mr. Kim Hong-Joon: "We always promote relationships with countries to promote cinema to the world, so we really want to balance international standards and the needs of local audiences when cooperating. Introducing Korean cinema works, restoring films, coordinating in film festivals... are good starts for cooperation in cinema between the two countries".
At the workshop, director Trinh Hoan said that after hearing the local people introduce the beautiful landscapes of the locality, she was very happy. Previously, when filming in Da Nang City, she received a lot of support. Through the workshop, director Trinh Hoan wanted to ask about the new local support policy, whether it supports costs such as hotels, food, accommodation... so that the film crew can have the funds to bring the crew back to the locality to make their film?
Answering this question from director Trinh Hoan, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thi - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang City said that Da Nang currently has support policies, creating conditions to attract film crews and large producers to choose Da Nang as a filming location such as: simplifying administrative procedures, financial support through free entrance tickets to relics, scenic spots, incentives, discounts on accommodation and food services for film crews, supporting promotion on the city's information channels... In addition, the film studio construction project has been included by the Prime Minister in the project list in the Da Nang City Planning to 2050.
Ms. Thi affirmed that Da Nang City is committed to supporting and accompanying film crews coming to Da Nang City to film. In the coming time, Da Nang will focus on formulating policies to provide maximum support and promote the promotion strategy to film crews in a more synchronous, effective and powerful manner. Continue to mobilize local businesses, especially accommodation and culinary establishments, tourist areas and spots to contribute to creating a mutually beneficial mechanism and some special preferential mechanisms for film producers.
Through the workshop, Vietnamese companies and filmmakers hope to have the opportunity to cooperate with Korean companies to release films in Korea and the world market.
Film experts have also contributed many ideas to enhance the position of Vietnamese cinema as well as offer creative solutions to promote Vietnam's film industry further.
At the end of the workshop, in the evening of the same day, the Vietnamese delegation organized VietNam Night, an event in a series of programs introducing Vietnamese cinema, the Da Nang Asian Film Festival, the filmmaking environment, and wonderful destinations of Vietnamese provinces and cities.
About 600 guests, including Korean and international film producers, actors, and directors, attended and interacted with members of the Vietnamese delegation. Many famous Vietnamese actors, directors, and producers attended the program: People's Artist Ngoc Lan; actors Ninh Duong Lan Ngoc, Lien Binh Phat; singer Son Thach; directors Phan Dang Di, Phan Gia Nhat Linh; producers Ngo Thi Bich Hanh, Nguyen Trinh Hoan, Tran Thi Bich Ngoc, etc. Many young Vietnamese filmmakers who attended the Busan International Film Festival also attended the program.
At Vietnam Night, leaders of 4 provinces and cities: Da Nang, Ninh Binh, Quang Ninh and Phu Yen sent short but impressive messages inviting international filmmakers to come to Vietnam to produce films.
Mr. Jeremy Segay - Regional Audiovisual Attaché, French Embassy in Vietnam shared: "The impressive and super fun Vietnam Night organized by VFDA and partners is the pinnacle of the unprecedented presence of Vietnamese Cinema at the Busan International Film Festival and the 'Asian Film and Content Market'. This year, Vietnam has no less than 5 booths and all visitors to the fair saw that Vietnam has stepped up the promotion of provinces and cities as filming locations as well as domestic film sales internationally"./.
