San Diego-based computer giant Qualcomm, the world’s largest supplier of mobile phone chips, hired a team of former Apple engineers in 2021 to design a laptop chip that launched this year and is powering AI features for Microsoft’s Windows operating system.
Now, the technology developed by that team of engineers — a custom computing suite Qualcomm calls “Oryon” — is making its way into a mobile phone chip for the first time.
Qualcomm has modified parts of the chip, called the Snapdragon 8 Elite, to handle tasks like image and text generation. The company will provide software developers with special tools beyond what’s already available in Alphabet’s Android operating system to take advantage of those parts of the chip.
"AI is one of the areas where I think Google is moving quickly, but we have our own technology to offer to other developers," Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm's mobile business, told Reuters.
According to Qualcomm, big names in the technology industry such as Samsung Electronics, Asustek Computer and Xiaomi among others will use this new chip.
