Compared to the teams participating in this Asian Championship, Vietnam is a country that does not have an official pickleball federation and the Pickleball and Friends Vietnam Club has registered to participate with its own funding. Captain of the Pickleball and Friends Vietnam Club Vu Thanh Duong shared with Thanh Nien : "We registered to participate in the tournament with the goal of competing, learning experience and hoping to have an official federation when it is likely that this sport will be included in the competition at the upcoming SEA Games and ASIAD."
Vietnamese Pickleball players participating in the tournament are all former athletes and coaches of other sports who switched to competing with passion such as Truong Quang Vu, tennis coach Nguyen Anh Thang, Vu Thanh Duong (volleyball), former Vietnamese women's tennis champion Tran Thi Kim Loi, Le Ba Thanh Xuan (tennis), Tran Huyen Trang... Vietnamese tennis players competed very well and won 2 silver medals and 1 bronze medal in 3 events.
The most outstanding player was Nguyen Anh Thang, who brought home the first silver medal for Vietnamese pickleball in the men's singles for the over-35 age group. The Vietnamese player caused a surprise on the first day of competition when he defeated strong opponents from Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan with beautiful play and only lost 1-2 to Vishal Jadhav (Indonesia) in the final match.
Sharing after the final match, Nguyen Anh Thang said: "I am very happy and pleased to win the silver medal in the highest arena of Asia. We competed with the highest determination when wearing the Vietnamese shirt. Because compared to the teams of other countries that have been practicing professionally for a long time, my teammates and I have only been practicing for a few months. I think, if we had more systematic and professional training, Vietnamese pickleball could completely compete for medals at Asian tournaments or even higher."
Not only that, Nguyen Anh Thang and his teammate Le Ba Thanh Xuan brought home the bronze medal for Vietnamese pickleball in the men's doubles over 35 event. Two players Truong Quang Vu and Tran Thi Kim Loi also reached the final match in the mixed doubles over 35 and only lost to the very strong duo of the host country Kai Fen Yi and Yao Cheng Wang .
Witnessing Vietnam's pickleball team competing in Asia for the first time, President of the Asian Pickleball Federation (AFP) Hogan Lai praised: "I don't think Vietnam's pickleball team has only been practicing for a few months when they have players with very good techniques and great competitive spirit. I hope Vietnam's pickleball team will soon have a federation to contribute to the development of this sport in Asia."
Pickleball was introduced in 1965. It is a game played with a wooden racket and a plastic ball with holes in it. It can be played as a singles or doubles game like badminton, table tennis or tennis. Pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors on a court the size of a badminton court with a net like tennis.
