Today (November 29), the Minister of Education and Training approved the high school graduation exam plan from 2025, which includes 4 subjects. Candidates will take 2 compulsory subjects including literature and math. Candidates will choose the remaining two subjects from the subjects they studied in grade 12, including: foreign languages, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economic and legal education, information technology, and technology. The literature exam will be in essay form; the remaining subjects will be in multiple choice form. According to university representatives, the high school graduation exam plan will significantly impact the admission method from 2025.

University admissions will have changes from 2025

Solutions to reduce students' learning pressure

Supporting this plan, Professor Huynh Van Son, Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, said: "The exam plan is consistent with the viewpoint of implementing the 2018 General Education Program". Professor Son emphasized: "It can be said that this is a step forward in assessment. By reducing the number of exam subjects, the plan simultaneously reduces the study pressure of students and eases the exam organization work of the whole society".

Furthermore, Mr. Son also said that allowing students to choose 2 subjects reflects the spirit of the 2018 General Education Program when allowing students to choose subjects related to their strengths and career orientation.

"It can be affirmed that this is a feasible and effective solution in the current context," said the Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

Unfortunately foreign language is an elective subject.

Master Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Business Relations Center of Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, expressed regret over the high school graduation exam plan from 2025 when foreign languages are an elective subject. According to Master Son, foreign languages play an important role not only in the learning process but also in the future work process.

"Making foreign languages a compulsory subject in the high school graduation exam will promote many learning processes, improve and enhance students' foreign language skills," Master Son analyzed.

University Admissions: There will be many changes in the subject combinations for admission

Dr. Pham Tan Ha, Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said that with the characteristics of the 2018 General Education Program allowing students to choose subjects right from the time they enter grade 10, the number of subjects in the graduation exam does not affect the learning process. The 4-subject graduation exam option also does not affect the separate admission methods currently used in many schools such as: considering high school learning results, competency assessment exams, priority consideration of international certificates, etc.

However, Dr. Ha analyzed: "Universities will rearrange the subject combinations to be more suitable when considering the results of the high school graduation exam from 2025. This arrangement is also based on the actual subject selection of students in the 2018 General Education Program".

From 2025, high school students will take 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects for the graduation exam.

According to Dr. Ha, although there are many changes in the subject combinations for admission, with the 4-subject exam plan of the Ministry of Education and Training, the traditional combinations with many registered candidates are still retained such as: math-physics-chemistry, math-chemistry-biology, math-physics-English, literature-history-geography, math-literature-English...

"There will be adjustments in the admission plan to better suit students' learning and testing needs," noted the Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City.
