Reporting to Tuoi Tre Online , Ms. Nguyen Phuong Thao said that on October 16, 2024, her son HN (a 7th grade student at Dinh Thien Ly Secondary and High School, District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) had his toys stolen by his friend H.D. and several other students on the school grounds.
N. was twisted by D. and fell and broke her arm. According to the injury certificate from Children's Hospital 2, N. suffered a fracture of the middle third of her left humerus and had to undergo surgery to fix the bone.
On October 21, N. was discharged from the hospital. On October 28, N. returned to school. At the end of November, N. will have a second surgery.
Ms. Thao said that until now, her family still feels uneasy when D. and N. study together. She requested that the school transfer D. to another class because, according to her, D. has violent tendencies, once broke N.'s umbrella, and sometimes threatened N.
Therefore, Ms. Thao's opinion is that D. needs to be transferred to another class to ensure her child's safety. "That is my greatest wish," Ms. Thao said.
However, according to Ms. Thao, the school did not accept this request. And despite having held 5 meetings with school leaders, the school still maintained its stance of not transferring D. to class and still allowed these two students to study together.
Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of November 8, Ms. Hoang Thi Diem Trang - principal of Dinh Thien Ly Secondary and High School - said that the school considered the issue from many perspectives, in which the most important thing is to ensure the best for the two students.
Ms. Trang said that after analyzing the video footage from the camera recording the accident between the two students many times, the school recognized that this was an accident caused by a mistake while playing, with no signs of fighting or school violence.
Ms. Trang added that there was a time when D. broke N.'s umbrella, but after careful consideration, there was no evidence of violence or bullying. According to her, D. may be a little clumsy in expressing his emotions, not that he has violent or hooligan tendencies.
Therefore, according to her, it is currently impossible to ask D. to change classes as N.'s family requested.
"In this case, changing classes is not a punishment that a student has to endure," said Ms. Trang.
However, according to Ms. Trang, the school is still monitoring the two students and is taking individual support measures for each student. In addition, teachers also organize additional meetings with the class to listen to other students, lightening the atmosphere in the classroom.
Next week, the school will invite two independent experts from Ho Chi Minh City University of Education to listen, evaluate and consult on how to resolve the incident. This will also provide a basis for the school to work with the parents involved in the coming time.
The families of the two students have not yet agreed on compensation.
Regarding compensation, Ms. Thao said that she initially requested D.'s family to compensate a total of 128.9 million VND, including 4 payments.
One is the hospital fee after insurance deduction, 4.3 million VND. Two is the cost of food and travel during the hospital stay, 1.5 million VND. Three is the income lost due to leave, 23.1 million VND. Four is mental compensation, 100 million VND.
According to the minutes of the meeting between the school leaders and the two families on November 1, 2024, D's family proposed compensation of 40 million VND for hospital fees and other expenses.
According to Ms. Thao, currently the cost is not a problem for her family, however, D.'s family is not willing to fulfill their obligations.
On his part, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Luong Duy Anh (D.'s father) said that the family was very sympathetic in this case. He said that the day he heard about N.'s accident, he contacted Ms. Thao's family. The next morning, he took D. to the hospital to see N.
Mr. Duy Anh said that compensating for the expenses is something his family naturally has to do. But up to now, his family has not made the compensation because they have not reached an agreement with N's family.
As for D., Mr. Duy Anh informed that he was also affected by the incident. He feels guilty and is currently receiving psychological counseling. He has also lost 4kg since the incident.
