A parent whose child is studying at Nghi Quang Secondary School (Nghi Loc District, Nghe An) reported to Thanh Nien reporter that in order to classify students, the school recently organized 2 surveys (including 3 subjects: math, literature and foreign language).
Accordingly, in the first round, students must achieve a total of 15 points in 3 subjects or more; in the second round, students must achieve a minimum score of 12 points or more to be eligible to take the exam to enter grade 10 at a public school. Students with lower scores must take the exam to enter a vocational school or a private school.
After the two assessment exams, some students of Nghi Quang Secondary School received a text message from their homeroom teacher not to attend the 10th grade high school entrance exam review class.
Similarly, at Tien Thiet Secondary School (Nghi Loc District), some parents also reported similar content. Some parents came to the school leaders to ask for their children to be allowed to review for the entrance exam to public grade 10 but were still not accepted.
The incident of preventing students from taking entrance exams to public schools at the above schools has made many parents extremely upset.
However, speaking to the press, leaders of the above schools said that the school has no policy of preventing students from taking the entrance exam to grade 10 public schools, and "it could be that the homeroom teacher misunderstood"?
Faced with the above situation, on May 11, the Nghe An Department of Education and Training had to issue a document guiding a number of contents for implementing tasks at the end of the 2023-2024 school year, in which it noted that secondary schools must strictly organize review sessions for grade 9 students and guide students to take the entrance exam to grade 10.
The 10th grade entrance exam in Nghe An this year will be very "hot" as the number of 9th grade students has increased dramatically.
This Department requested the Chairmen of the People's Committees of districts and towns to direct the Department of Education to properly implement the streaming policy, as well as create fair opportunities for all students, and at the same time clearly state that all 9th grade students who are eligible for graduation recognition have the right to take the entrance exam to grade 10.
The Director of the Nghe An Department of Education and Training also requested that schools absolutely not prevent 9th grade students who have been recognized as graduates from taking the 10th grade entrance exam. During the implementation process, the Department requested that the Education Departments inspect the implementation of the affiliated units. If any violations are discovered, strict sanctions must be imposed.
The 10th grade entrance exam for the 2024-2025 school year in Nghe An is expected to be very stressful as the number of 9th grade students has increased dramatically to more than 53,000 students (an increase of more than 7,000 students compared to the previous school year). It is expected that more than 10,000 students will not have the opportunity to study in public schools and will have to transfer to non-public schools or vocational schools.
